Overview

A brand new novella from USA Today Bestselling author Jaye Wells ...

Meridian Six remembers the days before the Troika enslaved humans. She also remembers her mother, a freedom fighter murdered in the final battle between humans and vampires. But it is her mother's final words that have haunted her:

Red means life.

In the years since her mother's death, she has been used as both a propaganda tool and a blood slave by the Troika. She's withstood their indignities because the alternative meant bleeding out in a blood camp. But their abuses finally go too far, and she decides to run towards freedom and her mother's red light.

On the other side, she finds the Sisters of Crimson. They help her just as her mother promised, but they also hand her to the human rebels. The vampires used her famous name to keep human slaves biddable, but now the humans want to use it inspire a revolution.

When the world is at war, freedom is a luxury paid for with blood.

Meet the Author

Jaye Wells is a USA Today-bestselling author of urban fantasy novels. The fifth novel of her best-selling Sabina Kane series, BLUE-BLOODED VAMP, won RT Booklovers’ Magazine’s Best Urban Fantasy of 2012.

Raised by booksellers, she loved reading books from a very young ago. That gateway drug eventually led to a full-blown writing addiction. When she’s not chasing the word dragon, she loves to travel, drink good bourbon and do things that scare her so she can put them in her books. Jaye lives in Texas with her husband and son. What would you do if vampires suddenly took over the world, forc

What would you do if vampires suddenly took over the world, forcing all humans into blood camps caste by blood type and yours was considered ‘most desirable’? That’s the reality Carmina Sargosa (known to her vampire captors as “Meridian Six”) is faced with in this fast-paced short story. I haven’t read much vampire fiction before but I loved this story and the characters (both human and vampire) that make up this dystopian world. Six reminded me a lot of Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games—she’s tough and will do whatever it takes to protect the people she cares about—but she’s also a reluctant rebel who’s thrust to the centerfold of a resistance that she hadn’t intended to be a part of in the first place. A really great (and quick) read for lovers of YA & fantasy novels!

    more from this reviewer

A dark & gritty world of vampires

Jaye Wells is best known (so far) for her Sabina Kane series which is also about vampires, but this world is much MUCH darker. Be prepared to enter a world that is intriguing & well-written, but not very pretty. It's a combination of dystopian future & evil vampire rulers all rolled into one.

Personally, I tend to shy away from worlds this dark, but it still held me & made me read on. I understand there will be more of this world published in the future & I will probably return simply because Wells is one of my favorite authors & she crafts a wonderful story.
