Ellie Harrison moves to a new town and a new school, and soon finds herself drawn to Will Wagner, the football star. When King Arthur fell, the Order of the Bear rose to track each generation's incarnation of him. Now Merlin, otherwise known as Mr. Morton, has found a modern Arthur in Will, the captain of the football team at Avalon High. And it's up to new girl Ellie, otherwise known as the Lady of the Lake, to make sure that he survives an attack by his half-brother Marco, otherwise known as Mordred. Throw in Lance, his girlfriend Jennifer, and mean Morgan, and the round table is nearly complete. Coronado uses more of a traditional black-and-white comic-book format than a true Japanese-style manga (think Archie , not Oh My Goddess !). Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Chapter One And by the moon the reaper weary, Piling sheaves in uplands airy, Listening, whispers "'Tis the fairy Lady of Shalott."

"You are so lucky."

Trust my best friend Nancy to see things that way. Nancy is what you would call an optimist.

Not that I'm a pessimist, or anything. I'm just ... practical. At least according to Nancy.

Apparently, I'm also lucky.

"Lucky?" I echoed into the phone. "In what way am I lucky?"

"Oh, you know," Nancy said. "You get to start over. In a whole new school. Where no one knows you. You can be whoever you want to be. You can give yourself a total personality makeover, and there won't be anyone around to be all, 'Who do you think you're kidding, Ellie Harrison? I remember when you ate paste in first grade.'"

"I never thought of it that way," I said. Because I hadn't. "Anyway, you were the one who ate paste."

"You know what I mean." Nancy sighed. "Well. Good luck. With school and everything."

"Yeah," I said, sensing even over the thousand-mile difference between us, that, it was time to hang up. "Bye."

"Bye," Nancy said. Then added, "You're so lucky."

Really, up until Nancy said this, I hadn't thought there was anything lucky about my situation at all. Except maybe the fact that there's a pool in the backyard of our new house. We never had a pool of our own. Before, if Nancy and I wanted to go to the pool, we had to get on our bikes and ride five miles - mostly uphill - to Como Park.

I have to say, when my parents broke the news about the sabbatical, the fact that they were quick to add, "And we're renting a house with a pool!" was the only thing that kept down the vomit that started coming up in my throat. If you are a child of professors, sabbatical is probably about the dirtiest word in your own personal vocabulary. Every seven years, most professors get offered one - basically a yearlong vacation, so they can recharge and try to write and publish a book.

Professors love sabbaticals.

Their kids hate them.

Because would you really want to uproot and leave all your friends, make all new friends at a whole new school and just be getting to think, "Okay, this isn't so bad," only to have to uproot yourself again a year later and go back where you came from?

No. Not if you're sane, anyway.

At least this sabbatical isn't as bad as the last one, which was in Germany. Not that there's anything wrong with Germany. I still exchange e-mails with Anne-Katrin, the girl I shared a desk with in the weird German school I went to there.

But come on. I had to learn a whole other language!

At least with this one, we're still in America. And okay, we're outside Washington, D.C., which isn't like the rest of America. But everyone here speaks English. So far.

And there's a pool.

Having your own pool is a lot of responsibility, it turns out. I mean, every morning you have to check the filters and make sure they aren't all jammed up with leaves or dead moles. There's almost always a frog or two in ours. Usually, if I get out there early enough, they're still alive. So then I have to conduct a frog rescue expedition.

The only way you can rescue the frogs is to reach down into the water to pull the filter basket out, so I've ended up touching all sorts of really gross stuff that floats in there, like dead beetles and newts and, a few times, drowned mice. Once there was a snake. It was still alive. I pretty much draw the line at touching anything that is capable of sending paralyzing streams of poison into my veins, so I yelled to my parents that there was a snake in the filter basket.

My dad is the one who yelled back, "So? What do you want me to do about it?"

"Get it out," I said.

"No way," my dad said. "I'm not touching any snake."

My parents aren't like other parents. For one thing, other people's parents actually leave the house to go to work. Some of them are gone for as many as forty-five hours a week, I've heard.

Not mine. Mine are home all the time. They never leave! They're always in their at-home offices, writing or reading. Practically the only time they come out of their offices is to watch Jeopardy! and then they yell out the answers at each other.

No one else's parents know all the answers to Jeopardy! or yell them out if they do. I know, I've been to Nancy's house and seen the evidence for myself. Her parents watch Entertainment Tonight after dinner, like normal people.

I don't know any of the answers on Jeopardy! That's why I sort of hate that show.

My dad grew up in the Bronx, where there aren't any snakes. He completely hates nature. He totally ignores our cat, Tig. Which of course means that Tig is crazy about him.

And if my dad sees a spider, he screams like a girl. Then my mom, who grew up on a ranch in Montana and has no patience for spiders or my dad's screaming, will come in and kill it, even though I've told her a million times that spiders are extremely beneficial to the environment.

Of course, I knew better than to tell my mom about the snake in the pool filter, because she'd probably have come out and snapped its head clean off right in front of me. In the end, I found a forked branch, and pulled it out that way. I let it go in the woodsy area behind the house we're renting. Even though the snake didn't turn out to be that scary once I finally got the guts to save it, I kind of hope it doesn't come back.

    Fans of Meg Cabot are treated to a change in style by the author. Paired with artist Jinky Coronado, Ms. Cabot retells AVALON HIGH in a comic/manga style. Readers do not have to have read AVALON HIGH to follow this new version of the story.

    Elle Harrison has just moved to Annapolis with her history buff parents. Almost immediately weird things start to happen. Her history teacher, Mr. Morton, explains it as the return of King Arthur and the Age of Enlightenment. Apparently Elle is the Lady of the Lake and the football star, Will Wagner, is Arthur reincarnated. Elle's parents totally believe the story. Will thinks it's all a joke. And Elle, she doesn't know what to believe. The pieces all seem to fit together perfectly. Is it too much of a coincidence?

    What takes 300 pages to be told in the original young adult story is told in just over 100 pages via the comic version. Of course, many of the details are left out. But the drawings reveal the story beautifully. Elle has to try to convince Will that he is King Arthur before the Homecoming dance. If he doesn't accept that he is the reincarnated King, the Age of Enlightenment can not happen, and the world will be thrust into darkness. No pressure, right? And to make matters worse, Will's brother, Marco, previously thought to be locked safely in a mental institution, is now out, and no one may be safe.

    This is my first foray into this book style. Having read AVALON HIGH, I must admit I enjoyed THE MERLIN PROPHECY more than I expected to. I was instantly drawn to Elle and her adventures. The pictures were very vibrant, even in black and white. The details were amazing, and the story unfolded quickly and smoothly. Of course, Ms. Cabot leaves the reader wanting to learn what comes next. Not even the original story reveals how all the characters turn out. The reader will just have to wait for the continuation in AVALON HIGH CORONATION VOL. 2: HOMECOMING, due out in June 2008.

    Great New Format for Meg's Writing

    I love that Meg is trying her hand at manga- it's a great format and after reading the first volume of the sequel, there's great things to come from Meg and Jinky. Yes, the first book is recapped for most of it, which does sort of suck, but it's nice to see a different perspective to the original novel. Also, the reason for the recap is for those manga lovers who did not read the novel version, not necessarily for those who may have forgotten what happened in the novel. I think it's hilarious how some people are like 'Meg should stick to writing!' when she is still writing for the manga. She wrote the script and Jinky made the drawings based on all of that. For those wondering why there's a manga sequel and not a new manga series, it's because Meg tried to pitch ideas for a new manga series, but neither publisher liked them and suggested doing a manga sequel to one of her books. They agreed that Avalon High and Jinx had the best potential because of their paranormal element. The reason she did not write a novel version is because the story she had in mind for the manga sequel was not long enough to fill a full novel. Manga was the perfect avenue to put it across in. Also, in regards to the length, all the HarperCollins/Tokyopop mangas released last summer were all pretty short, most likely so they could see what the demand would be for them. The second and third volumes are going to be double the length of the first, so don't fear about the length anymore. And for those complaining about how long it took them to read, all mangas take less than an hour to read, so finishing this one in half an hour is not exactly a huge feat, nor is it totally surprising. This is how mangas work.

    i love meg cabot books!!! i mean i use to hate hate books. in my school we have these things call book reports and i would never do them cuz i hate reading i think it the most boring thing ever but one day my counsler made pick a book so i went to the school's libary and i saw alvon high and the only reason i pick it was beacuase of the cover and i fell in love with the book it was sooo aswome now i cant stop reading books but i only read meg cabots im so stuck on her series of princees dairies meg cabot books are orginial i love alvon high its an orginal so when i heard thier another sequel i knew i had to get i havent read it but i know it will be aswome and for you people who hate it then you dont have any taste in books -xoxo rocker chic out

    Please Stick 2 Regular Books

    I was an okay book but too short!! She should just stick to the regular books Meg Cabot. You're a great writer but the sequal was okay but not as great as a real book.The first book was great and interesting. Don't get me wrong and say the sequal is not interesting. I enjoyed the artwork.

    It was OK

    I thought that the first one was just plain awesome, but this one was like the exact same with a little bit of new stuff.I guess it was OK but compared to the first one, it was very disappointing.

    Loved the first Avalon High

    I just got through reading the first Avalon High, and I LOVED IT! I was going to see if you had another one out, but I found the manga one (Avalon High: The Coronation). I think you should stick with writing. The first one (Avalon High) was great though! The best book I've read.

    The First one was much better

    it wasn't horrible but comparing to the first Avalon high this is truly disappointing It's better to just read Avalon high This was basically a retold of the story with a tiny bit of new drama

    its not as good as the first one

    i liked it a lil but i agree the manga style is way too short and it just isnt gonna beat the first one. so stick to writing meg!♥

    First one is better

    I don't like the manga-style,because it was too short, and it was like she went over the ending of the first book again. If she had put more effort into it and made it a actual book it would have been much better.

    STAY IN LITERATURE FORMAT!!!

    avalon high the book was a lot better than the manga version. personally, i love manga so this was a huge disappointment. the book was sooo good and then when i read this manga version first of all i read it in under 20 minutes 'so it was too short' and second of all the whole book was recapping the 1st one 'which was unnecessary, because someone could have inferred the recaps if they didn't remember the 1st book' & by the time something new happened the book was over and said, 'to be continued'. which was soo annoying and now viewers have to wait 'what i'm guessing will be a very, very very long time' for the next manga book in the series to come out. how annoying!-viewers don't get ur hopes up for this manga version! it was very unimpressive. avalon high should have stayed in regular literature format!!!

    This is about a girl who moves to a new town and school, meets new friends, and finds out she is the reincarnation of somebody in King Arthur's Court! I personally prefer the novel 'Avalon High' than the manga, but i recommend this book.

    Good Reading

    The story starts out a bit confusing. Near the end of the first chapter it starts to fall into place. The romance between Ellie and Will makes sense both being reincarnated from a High Priestess and a King. The art is cute with a manga feel and style. The way that the art gives us glimpses of the two stars in their arthurian appearance as they would be in the past is great to see. It is a cute use of imagery. The way the past arthurian times are drawn into the story enhances the present story of high school and the trials and tribulations that students face there. The characters do interact well together. As you get farther into the story and learn more of the characters you find not only your interest in them growing but you start caring about them. Ellie has an exciting and eventful life. She is trying to repair her b/f's relationship with his dad, she gets to deal with bullies and on top of all that she has to save the world. All in the life of a teenage girl at Avalon High.

    Why?

    I loved Avalon High and when I heard she was coming out with a sequel I couldn't wait. Then i heard it would be in Manga.... then I got the book 'even though I'm not a big fan of Manga' and it was SO thin and i finshed in the 5 minutes it takes me to get home from the bookstore. There was no new informantion! And the pictures totally ruin everything. I thought Will was a GIRL for half of the book before I realized that they just made him really femanine and Ellie's 'features' were too enhanced, it was an insult.

    Avalon High, where the past could be the future.

    I enjoyed reading Avalon High, it has a nice story about a girl who comes to realize that she may have been part of Camelot hundreds of years ago in another life, and that all the other people that were involved with that life in Camelot are here now as well. Can she help stop the evil forces that destroyed Camelot so long ago from doing it again, or will the world go into yet another Dark Age that it may never come out of? Jinky Coronado does beautiful illustrations for Avalon High so I'm glad that she'll be doing the next issue as well. I think Avalon High is worth checking out, and I'm looking forward to getting the next issue.

    not what i would have expected from her

    Can you say Disappointed?! There was no new information introduced in this book except for like the last 5 pages!! It took me like ten minutes to read this and I was not happy. It's cool she wanted to try magna and stuff, but her first book was already a regular novel. She should have just stayed with that format and started a different series in magna. For a really good writer, it looks pretty cheap. Like her publishers were nagging her to get something out, so she whipped it together or something. I hope the next installment is a regular, plain-jane novel.

    This was an awsome book. I love to read but I need a book that gets my attention and keeps it. I'd say this is one of those books. Any one who loves Meg Cabot books will love this one!

    Great adaptation and artwork

    Avalon High Coronation: The Merlin Prophecy is an excellent adaptation for young readers. Lost in much of the hype of acclaimed author Meg Cabot's work is the first class artwork of up-and-coming talent Jinky Coronado. Jinky brings these characters to life to reflect a full range of emotions and teenage angst. If a picture tells a thousand words, then Jinky has complemented Meg Cabot's writing in countless ways. I highly recomend this book for young readers and parents who are particular about what their children read.
