Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Williamson
Sam and Marina's dad has always talked about Hala Aisha who was his neighbor in Turkey when he was a young boy. He has kept in touch with her through letters and this summer she is coming to visit the family. From the stories their father has told them about Hala Aisha, the children have their own idea of what she would be like—but they discover someone totally different. When Sam and Marina find a mermaid at their parents' fish market, they secretly take her home and try to figure out a way to keep her alive. The bathtub seems like the best place, but what do they feed a mermaid and how do they care for her? And what do they do when their parents come home and want to use the bathroom? Trying to keep their parents and Hala Aisha from knowing what is going on becomes harder and harder. Then Hala Aisha discovers the mermaid and shows the children pictures of when she had a "friend" like the one they have brought home. Suddenly the summer takes on a new look. The children and Hala Aisha enlist the help of another boy and his grandfather in the caring of the mermaid. Hala Aisha eventually comes up with a solution to the problem; when she travels home to Turkey the mermaid travels with her. A "First Flight" chapter book, Level 4 reader, this story will delight readers and provide an excellent avenue for them to become more confident in their reading ability. The black-and-white illustrations by Eugenie Fernandes provide information and a humorous picture of the action as the summer and story progress.
