Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Christopher Columbus and Captain John Smith claimed to have seen them. Sailors and children have been saved, drowned or eaten by them. P.T. Barnum and Dr. J. Griffin captured one and had it on display, and China was founded by one. Many of the stories and myths about mermaids and mermen are included in this easy-to-read chapter book. Colorful illustrations give the reader an idea of what these mysterious creatures possibly looked like. Each chapter covers a tale or myth from another country and pronunciations for unfamiliar words are included to assist the reader. Elementary-aged students will enjoy the entertaining legends about this popular mythical creature. This is part of "The Stepping Stones "series, beginning chapter books for young readers. NOT A BOOK FOR CHILDREN!!!!!!!! My 8 year old girl ended up crying and terrified after reading how mermaid Jenny  could eat people "Jenny was quick. She also had very long arms. In a flash she pulled her victim under the water. Then she chewed him up with her sharp green teeth.  "Watch for Jenny!" parents warned children. "Don't get too near the water" … there were many, many stories  about mermaids eating sailors". Not to mention the terrifying picture that they put of that mermaid on page 11. Also scary mermaids appear on pages  17 and 18.  AND THIS IS A BOOK FOR CHILDREN???? Are you kidding me? My daughter is crying saying "I wished I hadn't read that book. Now those images are in my mind".
