In this fast-paced second installment of the Princess Novels, author Hines tells the story of the Little Mermaid through the eyes of Danielle (the Cinderella character), Snow (Snow White), and Talia (Sleeping Beauty). In this version, the undine princess Lirea (the Little Mermaid), who takes on a new name-and personae, has gone on a rampage against undines and humans alike. Her insanity has led her to capturing the Queen of Lorindar's soul inside of a magic knife. The fairy tale framework provides a hook for the reader into this trio of engaging, effective adventurers taking to the high seas-without any dainty pretensions-to save their kingdom and the people they love. Although Hines attempts to incorporate the true stories about the princesses' early lives, these details fail to add much psychological depth to the characters and often come off as pasted-in distractions. Fortunately, the smooth flow of dialogue and action compensate, making this a nearly effortless read. This novel will appeal anyone who yearns for the heroines of their childhood-or just a witty, well-constructed adventure tale about powerful women stepping up with skill and cleverness.

    Jim Hines rocks!

    If you haven't tried Jim Hines yet, go out and get him. His plots are twisty, his dialogue is sharp and funny, and his stories are original. Hines' Goblin series (Hail Jig Dragonslayer!)is one of my favorites. and has earned a spot on the top shelf.

    Love this series

    I bought this book.

    The Mermaid's Madness follows The Stepsister Scheme in Hines' Princess series. It focuses on Talia (Sleeping Beauty), Danielle (Cinderella) and Snow (Snow White) whose stories are far darker than Disney would have you believe. In The Mermaid's Madness Hines takes on possibly the least-happy fairy tale, Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid.
    Fairy tale fans know that this tale is sad and gruesome while Hines fans will find this to be the prefect tale for Hines's princesses as Hines uses a heavy subtext of emotional recovery in this series.
    Lirea is the Little Mermaid, once friend to Queen Beatrice (Danielle's mother-in-law) who fell in love with a human prince who didn't love her and was given a knife that would restore her tail at the cost of her betrayer prince's life. But something happened and now Lirea is mad, broken and violent. When greeted by the queen after her family of undine return from their winter hibernation Lirea lashes out, stabbing the queen and trapping her soul in the cursed knife along with the prince's. Now Talia, Danielle and Snow must find the cause of Lirea's madness, find Lirea herself, and free the queen before her body gives out.
    Hines' work is excellent, layered between the fantasy and fancy of fairy tales with a real world punch that adult readers can't help but expect. Sure we all want there to be a happy ending, but isn't it more satisfying when it's fought for, earned, not merely handed over as if the players are exceptions to human nature instead of parts of it? The Mermaid's Madness is an excellent retelling of the original that nails the morbid sweetness of the legend while making it a more vibrant, fleshy thing before reader's eyes. Fantasy and urban fantasy fans are missing out if they aren't reading this series.

    Little Mermaid retold

    A very nice twist on the little mermaid tale using Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella to help tell the full story.

    I love Jim Hines and his books

    I would say this is the second of the books I have read, and the concept the story line and plots make you laugh, it tickles everyones views of some of your most favorite fairy tales, but it deffinately worth it. Enjoy!!

    Great book!

    I read the first one in this series, The Stepsister's Scheme, and it was very entertaining and well-written. This sequel did the first book justice. Jim writes his female protagonists very, very well; I usually have a hard time reading women written by men, but his ladies are so believeable! They have distinct personalities, and the conflicts between them are very realistic, despite this being a fantasy novel.

    Recommend to anyone who likes fantasy with a dash of humor!

    The Mermaid's Madness

    A dark adult version of the Little mermaid tail along with a different take on Fairly tail Princesses. I could not put this book down !!! it was a good book to read if you want to escape for a while.

    what happened to the little mermaid?

    a good book retelling the little mermaid but in my opinion didnt really have much of "lirea" the little mermaid in it. it slightly touch here & there in the book of her life with her prince but i wanted to know more details bout lirea. it also seemed like it took a while to get to what the point was. i honestly thought itd have more to do with lirea & went in a totally different direction than what i expected.

    This entertaining twisted fairy tale sequel to THE STEPSISTER SCHEME is an amusing dark spin of the Little Mermaid

    The Mermaid princess gave up everything for love except her life; however, the human she cherished turned elsewhere so her love was unrequited. Irate and jealous and isolated form her own kind due to her sacrifice, she attacked the cause of her lost love: Queen Beatrice of the Kingdom of Lorindar. Her effort proves successful leaving the Queen in a regal coma. Her three princess wards (Snow White, Talia the Sleeping Beauty and Danielle Cinderella) are worried about their beloved mentor's comatose state, but soon have their own problems when they are under assault next.

    They survive, but must find out who is behind the violence in order to put an end to it. They journey to the underwater kingdom of the Mer to obtain allies and to ascertain who amongst them might be the aggressor and why. Drinking plenty of terrible tasting tea to combat seasickness, the princesses risk their lives trying to save Queen Beatrice and themselves from a dangerously cunning adversary.

    This entertaining twisted fairy tale sequel to THE STEPSISTER SCHEME is an amusing dark spin of the Little Mermaid as Jim Hines tells the "true" tale of what happened; not the happy ending one. Fans will laugh at the princess stereotyping that lightens through lampooning the sinister enchanted fairy tale with nods to Fractured Fairy Tales of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame (Jay Ward, Alex Anderson and Bill Scott).
