    Authoritative resource

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate is probably one of the best dictionaries available, no matter the language. It's definitions are at times elegantly phrased and it contains just about the right elements. However, for specific nomenclature (e.g. scientific terms), it would be best if American Heritage College could be used side by side for comparison to get a better understanding. I have been using Merriam-Webster's for 5 years now and it almost never failed me. But from what I gather from other's opinion it may not contain the more modern and fashionable terms in use as does American Heritage which seems to be more progressive and which has more modern phrasings in its definitions. On the technical side, the CD-ROM included is great, and I use the digital version of the dictionary frequently when I am reading in front of my computer and it has made looking up a word much more convenient. For the CD-ROM alone the price is well worth it. But if you want something more concise and less traditional (rigid and comprehensive) this dictionary is not for you. Then, you should try Oxford, Cambridge, or Collins.

    If you enjoy etymology...

...then this is the dictionary for those who can't afford the OED. After looking at a number of dictionaries I purchased the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary because I wanted something more than pronunciation, parts of speech, and definitions. I enjoy knowing where and when a word comes from and how it made its sometime tortuous way into modern usage. The M-WCD package has this information. The accompanying CD-Rom is a wonderful addition to any desktop and relatively easy to use. (Be careful with the "Back" button because it may not take you back to where you thought it should and if you are doing multiple word searches, make sure your option hasn't gone back to the default.) Exploring the Search options is an engrossing endeavor. Want to know a cryptogram of a word? its date? a rhyming word? a crossword? an author quoted? Do you have a problem thinking of the right word but you know what it means? Just select the option you want, type in the word, and up pops all of the possibilities. Don't know the meaning of a word within the definition? Double click and it pulls up the entry for the selected word. Purchase of the dictionary also entitles you to a one-year free online subscription to their website which has even more information. My favorite feature? The Word of the Day - it¿s an alluring delight for lovers of lexicality.

    Excellent!

My purchase was to replace my 60 year old, well worn college dictionary with Webster's latest edition and I am well pleased.

Most of the above "Detailed Ratings" are not really applicable to a dictionary.

    Used this dictionary for years

I believe this dictionary is by far the best for what it offers, and I mean that in all respects. I have used one version or another since I entered college in the 1960's and it always gave me the most understandable definitions as well as those which made the most sense. The more recent edition is simply a step and in complete consistency with other previous editions only with an improvement in quality, terms, and so on. The term "Collegiate Dictionary" should not cause one to think the definitions are narrow or only for college use. It's applications are broad and the title only assures one that if they are in college these definitions would prove to be more adequate for their needs and what they are doing to obtain proficiency in standard use English. When I was a small child my grandmother would insist that Merriam-Webster provided the most reliable definitions and it has paid off for me having relied on that perception and wisdom.

Spread the word- its a winner!

Nothing bad to report here, just a complete, handy, easy to use classic- and I swear they're somehow making these things lighter! If you're looking for a good reference tool, then this is your book. Additionally, comes with CD-ROM attached to the inside back cover.

    Great for Spelling Bee!

I am just a ten year old with a normal life, and I LOVE to read but nobody really notices. But when the spelling bee time comes I really shine out. I study real hard and practically almost missed my summer break (I at least got to go to Stone Mountain and Six Flags). I was only in the fourth grade when I was runner-up for my school speling bee. I was against a fifth grader so don't go so hard on me. It might seem dumb to you about this spelling bee junk, but it's real important to me so this book helps cause it's the book/dictionary they use in the Scripts Howard Spelling Bee.

    ES in New York

One of the greatest and best dictionaries ever. I take this book to college, work, even church, and basically everywhere I go. If you want to expand your vocabulary, this is the right book to help you with it. The CD-ROM is also a big help also. I am on that CD-ROM at least an hour a day without fail. This really is the greatest dictionary I ever bought.

    Great Dictionary

This is a great dictionary. I've been using an old dictionary from the 1960's that my dad used in college. There's duct tape holding the binding together. I still don't have the heart to throw it out, but figured it was time for an update. I love the fact that it includes a CD and it's comprehensive (hey, it's a dictionary) and easy to read. Now, I'll be caught up to 2009!

Quality Dictionary and a Very Good CD-Rom

Confession, I bought this dictionary for the CD. And I am glad that I did. But first, the book review. For an abridged dictionary this is very good. The very good rating is based upon the accuracy and breadth of the definitions I have encountered. The CD is also good, but the interface is not perfect. If you can disregard such flaws as the window opens too small and your mouse scroll wheel is disabled, then I think you will be happy having this dictionary loaded onto your hard drive. Aside from some interface quirks, the dictionary works great, is fast, and offers some interesting search functions. You can also look up words from your MS Word documents without the copy/paste hassle.

    'Merriam-Webster' says it all

I needed to update my 1994, tenth edition, paperback, dependable, yellowing, thumbed thru, pages curling, trusty, look up anything, underlined, notes running up the margins, dog eared, first reference go to, still finding new things, collegiate dictionary. There was no other choice in my mind. Yep, I got another Webster's. Is it just me or do other people like to open a dictionary randomly and learn something new? If Merriam or Webster is listening, please add more drawings, pictures, graphs, charts, etc. I can't remember a time in the last 30+ years when I didn't have a Merriam-Webster dictionary for personal use.

    Words about words...

It's a dictionary!!! :) Does include much slang (not excited about that 'cause it slang--on the other hand, it can come in handy for those that aren't familiar with certian terms.) have to revise the rules for word games that say a word has to be in the dictionary! (smile)

Used for High School student who is very appreciative of this dictionary and finds most if not all the words needing to be looked up inside!

    This is the One!

I have several dictionaries in my house, so many that I can made a resonably good comparison. Other than the very expensive multi-volume works, this is the one to buy and depend on. It has the words!

Crush the cell by Michal Sheehan

This could hardly be described as an unbiased review since the author is my son and the editor my daughter. It is an important book to anyone concerned with the security of our nation and the viabilty of our economy,
My wife and I raised our seven children to be good Americans, good Christians and to think for themselves rather than to blindly follow the herd.
Michael's experience with the US Army, The State Department , The UN and the New York Police deparent gave him a rare if not unique vision of terrorism.
His thesis is we can conrol, but not eliminate the threat of terrorism without bankrupting the nation by crushing the individual terrorist cells in this country and abroad where possible. This requires
good intelligene and alert management of our counter terrorism resources.

    Profane Dictionary

This dictionary came highly recommended. I am all for a useful dictionary, but this one is awful. Please before ordering take note. Every nasty word and phrase you can think of is in this book. This is even being recommended for public schools middle and high school.

    Ehhh...

This dictionary started out really good, but I kind of lost interest halfway through. I have to admit that based on all the good reviews here, my hopes were really high for this book, but it was sort of a let down. Not the page-turner I had hoped for.
