About the Author

Beatrix Potter was born on July 28, 1866, at No 2, Bolton Gardens, Kensington, London. She loved nature and drawing as a child. In 1893, Beatrix sat down to write a picture letter to Noel Moore, the five-year-old son of her ex-governess, all about a naughty rabbit called Peter. Noel was ill in bed and so Beatrix wrote to him: "My dear Noel, I don't know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits...." And that's how The Tale of Peter Rabbit was created. It wasn't until 1902 that Frederick Warne published what would become one of the most beloved stories in children's books.

Peter's family and familiar faces, like Jemima Puddle-Duck and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, are all in the holiday spirit as they string Christmas cards, nibble mince pies, play, and sing carols. Readers can lift a series of flaps to reveal holiday moments, like a letter to Santa where Peter promises that he has been "a very good little rabbit this year" and Jemima Puddle-Duck's ducklings skating across a frozen lake. A decorated fir tree folds open in the last spread as Peter, his family, and friends trade gifts and dance together. Christmas imagery features prominently throughout the story, concluding with "Outside the brilliant fir tree/ shimmers, shines, and sways,/ As it welcomes everyone/ this happy Christmas Day!" Gentle, soft illustration communicates the cold, crisp weather and the warmth of time spent together. The playful rhyme makes this a fun holiday read-aloud as little fingers explore the flaps again and again.
