Overview

It's the night before Christmas, and Splat wonders if he's been a good enough cat this year to deserve a really big present. Just to make sure, he offers some last-minute help to his mom and, in typical Splat fashion, he messes up completely! That night Splat stays awake hoping to see Santa Claus. But when Splat misses him, he's sure his Christmas is ruined—along with his hopes for a really big present. . . .

Everyone's favorite furry cat is back in a Christmas story perfect for any child anxiously awaiting Santa's arrival.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The high-strung but well-meaning Splat, from Splat the Cat and Love, Splat, returns with a special request for Santa Claus. But when his younger sister expresses doubt that he's been good enough, he overcompensates: he washes the dishes (they weren't even dirty), adds extra decorations to the tree and, to be safe, waits up for Santa to assure him of his good behavior. Splat's frazzled black fur and bulging eyeballs—contrasting with a cool palette of greens and grays—seem to lift off the page, affirming his larger-than-life appeal. Ages 3–7. (Oct.)

Splat, the furry, black cat, returns in a Christmas story. He is busy writing a letter to Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Splat's message lets Santa know that Splat would like a ‘really big present' and that he has been very good. Splat's little sister casts some doubts as to whether Splat has been a really good cat and should receive a really big gift. The doubts begin to grow in Splat's mind so he decides to catch up on being good by helping his mother out around the house which leads to some hilarious results. By bedtime, he's still concerned about how good he has been during the year so with a flashlight in his paws, he decides to wait for Santa which is not an easy task. The illustrations of Splat are funny and the character's feelings are very expressive. The fluffy fur on Splat almost looks real. This is a fun story to enjoy with children who are anticipating the arrival Christmas. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
Scotton’s popular feline (Splat the Cat, Secret Agent Splat) sends off his gimme-letter to Santa (“Dear Santa, Can I please have a really big present for Christmas? Thank you, Splat. P.S. I have been a very good cat”) and then begins to second-guess the truthfulness of his postscript. It is time to chalk up some goodness points, so Splat sets about washing already clean dishes, overloading the Christmas tree with extra ornaments, and causing a snow disaster by over-zealous attempts at snow removal. It is starting to look as if Santa is not going to come with that really big present for Splat, after all, until Splat finds an extra big surprise just for him on Christmas morning. Splat’s materialistic, self-focused greed is left unchallenged anywhere in the story, which never shows him realizing any standard Christmas lessons about the joy of giving rather than receiving or of appreciating Christmas in a non-commercial way. Still, young children are likely to identify with Splat wholeheartedly and enjoy his comically misguided efforts to reap his reward. It is unclear why Splat’s family decides to organize Christmas morning essentially as a surprise party for him, and we never do find out what is in the very big box he receives. Again, young readers are unlikely to complain, instead enjoying the fun of posing their own answers. Scotton’s pictures depict Splat as grotesquely large and goggle-eyed, but his little mouse friend, Seymour, is pretty darned cute. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D. AGERANGE: Ages 4 to 7.

Although I am 57 years of age, as a teacher I found this book to be fun and interesting. My students also had fun hearing the story and the illustrations were excellent. If you have children Pre-K through 6th grade - this is an excellent choice for a fun read.

I saw this book, and the illustrations immediately caught my eye. Splat is so darling, and this is such a cute story. Of course, most importantly, my daughter (20 months old) loves this book. We read it a lot, and she adores little Splat, too.
