Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
One of the all-time champion worriers returns in Merry Christmas, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt, illus. by Cyd Moore. Here Stinky Face challenges his unflappable mother to come up with contingency plans for various possible emergencies: "What if Santa landed on our roof, and one of his reindeer got his antlers stuck in the tree that hangs over my bedroom window?"
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-In this fourth title about the habitual worrywart, the child is full of incessant questions about Christmas and Santa. What if one of the reindeer gets his antlers stuck in the trees? What if Santa's boots fall off? What if he gets chapped lips from all that flying? As in previous titles, the boy's mother reassures him with creative, exaggerated, and humorous solutions. In a satisfying ending, Santa is left a plate of cookies and a few emergency supplies that he might need. Moore's delightful watercolor cartoons are an integral part of the story's success. The pictures may be too small to carry for storytime, but work well for one-on-one sharing.-M. W. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
McCourt and Moore (It’s Time for School, Stinky Face, 2000, etc.) continue their collaborative examination of one imaginative little boy with a major case of the "what-if’s," the fourth in the successful series. This time the little boy called Stinky Face (who is actually quite sweet and clean) focuses his questions to his patient mother on the approaching Christmas holiday. The potential problems posed by Stinky Face begin realistically (too much snow, a melting snowman) and escalate rapidly into more fanciful fretfulness revolving around Santa’s imminent visit. Each question follows a "But what if . . . " pattern, smoothly answered by the boy’s creative mother, who has a quick-witted, soothing solution for any worry, just like the mother rabbit in The Runaway Bunny. Moore’s lighthearted illustrations ground these worried musings in reality, with believable images that will help to explain some of unusual ideas (a coat rack Christmas tree, a reindeer with its antlers stuck in overhanging branches). One delightful product of Stinky Face’s imagination is the friendly Christmasaurus, a holly-covered dinosaur who stops by to help put lights on the house. What if the Christmasaurus came back for another visit in the next story? And what if she and Stinky Face took off in Santa’s sleigh? And what if they crash-landed in the Easter Bunny’s egg-painting factory? Just ask Stinky Face’s mom. She’ll come up with some clever solution. (Picture book. 3-7)

    Very Cute Book

This is a very cute little story and shows kids that parents (or grandparents) can use funny little nicknames, with love, when trying to explain things to them. This age child seems to ask "why" about 100 times a day! This story tells how a parent explains, time after time, with patience, the answers to so many questions, especially at Christmas time.

    This book is ok.

This book is about a girl who asks questions about Christmas. She asks about what could go wrong and what they would do about it. This book is ok but if you don't want a short book don't read this one.
