Meet the Author

EUGENE H. PETERSON is a writer, poet, and retired pastor. He has authored more than thirty-four books (not including The Message). He is Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Eugene also founded Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland, where he ministered for twenty-nine years. After teaching at a seminary, he created The Message, a vibrant Bible paraphrase that connects with today's readers like no other.

It took Peterson ten years to complete. He worked not from any English text but from the original Hebrew and Greek texts to guarantee authenticity. At the same time, his ear was always tuned to the cadence and energy of the English spoken every day on the streets. He lives with his wife, Jan, in Montana.

    A bible to be read

Another review complained about the inability to search for certain passages in this version. It is important to understand that this is not a 'study bible', but something much different. This version is told in very contemporary language, and is excellent for those who might be intimidated to even crack open a bible for fear of being overwhelmed by older and often confusing language. It's also excellent for those who have studied extensively, because you can sit back and let the beauty of God's words wash over you, and rediscover the Man who has captured your heart.

no way to navigate to verse

unlike most bibles I've used on my Nook, there is no eay way to navigate to individual verses that I can find. The only internal bookmarks appear to be to the top of chapters. There should at least be a way to go to a chapter and then to a verse. If there is and I've just not been smart enough to find it, then I appologize. If you plan to read this Bible more like a book, then this will work fine. Otherwise you might want to wait for this to be fixed.

    Disappointed

I looked forward to reading this but, as other reviewers mentioned, you cannot skip to different chapters to look something up... Also, on some pages the bottom one or two lines did not show. May not be a big deal, but was frustrating, especially if it was a quote. So I deleted it from my Nook and will keep searching for a bible nookbook that is easier to read, as you would the bible, and has nothing missing.

    not recommended

This book does not allow for you to skip chapters. You must read from the begining to the end of a book or you must page thru to get to the chapter you want.

    Easy to navigate

Just got my Tablet and immediately bought this version of The Message. I personally find this easier to navigate than the book form which I also have. From the table of contents on page 7 you can quickly access any chapter by touching the chapter. Touch the bottom of the screen to access the toolbar, make the font very small and then quickly page through the chapter until you find the desired verse...the touch screen renders that process much faster than thumbing pages of the book. Then switch the font back to your usual reading size. There is also a scroll feature on the toolbar that allows you to quickly scroll to the general area you seek as well as a page finder at the lower right corner. Just remember the number 7 for the table of contents...an easy task as the number 7 is so biblical...and you can quickly access any chapter you wish. I am sure there are other nifty tools but I am not much of a techie and I just got my Tablet so haven't spent much time playing. Hope this helps those of you who find this Message tough to navigate. Yes, a scripture locator would be lovely but, as another poster mentioned, this is a reading Bible as opposed to a study Bible or an accurate translation. Linger with ease and joy in the beauty of Eugene Peterson's God-given gift to us!

    Refreshing Version

This version breathes new life into a very old story. There are some formating issues that can be overcome by adjusting font size and margins.

    Do NOT buy

I love this book in it's hard cover and wanted to carry with me all the time. Thought the NOOK edition would work. WRONG WRONG WRONG. The type messes up no matter how many adjustments I make, highlighting and note features are always messing up, can't get to the pages I want, kicks me completely out of the book, won't even let me go to Proverbs, and the list goes on.

Save your money and your time and frustration and just buy the hard cover edition.

    Really Spoke to Me

This really made the bible clear to me. For the first time I could read it with ease and really absorb the meaning. Highly recommended for anyone who struggles with reading ordinary bibles.

    Good modern translation

You could call it the Hip Hop version because of it being so easy to read, I recommend it if you are having trouble understanding your Bible and wish to understand better. I do not recommend this as a replacement for your Bible though, only as a reference tool.

Excellent for bringing Scripture to Life!

This edition is excellent for giving new life and vibrance to the Scriptures. It gives a clearer picture for some of the more 'wordy' passages. It makes the Bible easier to understand by using our vernacular. Wonderful tool!

The way it was meant to be

For various reasons, my outlook on Scripture had become jaded--almost as if the various translations were just so many brands of cola. All essentially the same, and consumers could buy according to their personal taste. Reading THE MESSAGE was unlike any other translation in my life. (It's the uncola UnBible.) Fresh, exciting, crisp, fast-moving. It seemed I was reading the New Testament for the first time--quite a sensation considering the many years I have studied and taught from more traditional translations. This is the ideal translation for those who, like myself, have become so familiar with Scripture that they begin to take it for granted. THE MESSAGE is also perfect for anyone who has been turned off or intimidated by the King James Version. The best way to describe it is that it's like finding personal letters in an old attic. They are nothing less than compelling! THE MESSAGE is a book I highly recommend to people of all faiths and interest levels, but only if they want to read something that is both energized and energizing.

    The Message that really speaks

From a majority vote, this 'version' really has God all over it. The way that Mr. Peterson articulates the concepts of the scriptures, brings to light a wide array of personal application and God's 'personal' view as to the actual way He had intended our lives and interpersonal relations to be. Taken that this is a version and not a word for word translation, will simply open your eyes when read in light of the King James or New King James. Especially if you are struggling with a certain passage or verse, read the Message and your comprehension as well as your understanding will simply unfold to His basic truth; that Jesus came down here to shed the reality and truth of REAL living upon this world with His Love, for us all.

    WOW! TALK ABOUT RELEVANT!!

This is probably the most inspiring and relevant Bible I have ever read. It speaks to me in contemporary language that makes sense.
