The Bible is the inspired word of God not a human product. Yes,

The Bible is the inspired word of God not a human product. Yes, humans wrote the Bible, but their words were inspired by the Holy Spirit and so is not just a history book of stories.

A useful teaching tool to understand different approaches to Scripture

My children became interested in reading the text of the Bible after enjoying a performance of Mendelssohn's "Elijah" oratorio. As a former Lutheran, now an enlightened atheist, I knew we had a lot of choices, from very literal translation to loose paraphrase/interpretation. This parallel Bible offers the widest possible range on this spectrum, with the New King James Version offering a more standardized and readable version of the famous translation that most people hear and think of as the "poetry" of the Bible, with The Message being the most contemporaneous in language and style, very strikingly so in parts.

With these two very different versions, you and your family can appreciate the historical and ever evolving nature of the scriptural text and all its difficulties, and productively call into serious question the fundamentalist view of the Bible as the literally "true," uniform "Word of God." From your encounter with such different ways of understanding the Judeo-Christian text, there's no escaping, at least for a rational mind, that the Bible is an inspired HUMAN product.
