Description: This is the second edition of a book of laboratory methods commonly used by investigators employing cellular immunological techniques in their research. Techniques no longer in use have been deleted, other techniques have been updated, and a new section on chemokines has been incorporated.
Purpose: The goal of the authors is to provide an easily used tool for researchers employing cellular immunological techniques in their research, regardless of whether or not immunology is their main area of expertise. One of the problems a neophyte encounters in attempting to incorporate a new procedure into the laboratory is not knowing the little things that make a technique work. This manual goes a long way towards making a new method "user friendly" to someone who has never done it before.
Audience: The book is intended for anyone who is doing laboratory work involving cellular immunological techniques. One needs only to be familiar with general laboratory procedures and equipment. The authors bring to this book a wide variety of laboratory experiences and presumably have consulted experts in any assay with which they feel they have limited familiarity.
Features: Many standard immunological techniques that laboratories use on a regular basis are covered. In most cases instruction in the use of specialized equipment is described but, for example, it is unlikely that one would be allowed to use a flow cytometer without "hands on" training on a machine. In contrast, one could easily learn how to isolate and count cells using this book. It certainly would provide a good refresher if a technique has not been used in some time. It would also serve as a good base for trouble-shooting if a laboratory technique has drifted over the years. The writing style is easy to understand. The recipes for buffers are useful. Unfortunately, there are no illustrations.
Assessment: Although a number of immunological techniques books have been written over the years, many of them are out of print. This is an up-to-date manual that offers some of the basic (almost historical) lab techniques as well as newer methods that are currently used. It is well written and easy to follow. There is no information on specific changes from the first edition, but it is fair to say that the second edition would be a useful addition to any laboratory currently using immunological techniques. In addition, the book is light and easy to use on a bench top.
