    A SPECTACULAR JOURNEY

First, let me note that it is very difficult to acquire a copy in English, but amazon.com supplies them (albeit it takes months to ship it here). Forget the wait though, this story is, plain and simple, captivating. After playing the game with the same name, it's easy to expect a high-octane thriller; however, Dmitry Glukhovsky's focus is not brutal shootouts, rather the bond the reader develops with the book's main character, Artyom, a young adult inhabitant of the Russian metro system--a whole new world beneath the shattered remains of the nuclear wasteland above. Throughout Artyom's journey to seek aid for his home station on the brink of falling to the attacks of the mysterious creatures known only as the Dark Ones, prepare to confront hordes of rodents, spine-chilling anomolies, blood-thirsty fascists and patriotic communists, and ultimately the dark, immersive, and unforgettable world of the Metro... Skillful writing, a powerful plot, and solid entertainment make this an-instant classic rivaling Cormac McCarthy's The Road and other top-notch modern classics.

[note: the english novel is a rough translation of the original in that it gets choppy here and there, so understand that this is not the author's writing rather poor translation editing--ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE!]

Being a Russian-speaking family, we are very proud of the popularity of Glukhovsky's books. It is a high-class reading, well narrated, entertaining. We hope that B&N will have his books in stock!

After a nuclear apocalypse, thousands survived by staying in the metro beneath Moscow. Artyom, a young man living in the northernmost station, is given a task to get to Polis, the legendary city station, to deliver a message to the military about the “dark ones”. The dark ones are a type of mutant that affects the human mind. He starts off guarding a caravan headed to Rizhskaya to trade. When they reach Rizhskaya, a man named Bourbon offers to taking Artyom further into the metro, toward “The Hansa”, a group of stations with a military alliance. Bourbon collapses mysteriously on the way there, but Artyom meets a strange named Khan who guides him closer to Polis. Artyom gets lost in a panic, but continues on his way to Polis. He runs into some officers of the Fourth Reich. They jail him for murdering an officer, and are going to have them executed, when a brigade of Trotskyist soldiers attack and rescue him. After a few more troublesome stations, Artyom makes it to Polis. He tells a soldier named Melnik about the dark ones, but the station decides not to help. Melnik tells Artyom that the priests are looking for a book, and that if they find it, they might give information. The priests send a man named Daniel with Artyom and Melnik to help them search. They ascend to the surface and head to the “Great Library” to look for the book. Daniel is killed by a strange mutant, but before he died, he gave Artyom information about a missle silo that held missles to destroy the dark ones’ nest. Artyom and Melnik try to find an entrance to the silo, called D-6. They find the entrance and discover that the missles are still under tarpaulins. Artyom heads back to his home station and meets a soldier named Ulman on the surface. They travel to the Ostantinko Tower, above the dark ones’ nest. Read the book to find out more.
Overall I thought this book was a good book. The setting is very complex because of all the metro stations. The characters are complex and have very interesting names, like Artyom, Melnik, Ulman, and Daniel. The plot is very interesting and has explanations for the oddities like the Kremlin and the Dark ones. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys post-apocalyptic fiction.

This is a hard to find book in the USA. I ended up ordering it from
The Book Depository Limited based in the UK. Very reasonable.
