Children's Literature - Bobbie Lowe
Sports and Leisure Careers is part of a series titled "In the Workplace." This series gives young adults an inside view of how their studies relate to the workforce world. Author Geoff Barker provides an extensive overview of this wide-ranging career industry. Each chapter has multiple subtitles presenting in real detail each respective subfield. The text is full of small graphics and sidebars full of fun, interesting, and necessary facts about careers in the sports or leisure field. One example is ?Handy Hints' which are very fun and attention grabbing. They are very insightful and creative. For example, "Jobs in outdoor adventure usually become available in late winter, as companies begin planning for their spring and summer seasons. They are looking to hire experienced leaders in the outdoor activities they specialize in, such as kayaking, backpacking, or rock climbing. Many companies will offer further training at a specific outdoor location with their own experienced staff. Certification in first aid, CPR, and water safety is important, and a good way to show initiative is to receive this ahead of time." Other small sidebars the authors provide are ?Main Tasks' which lists the main components of a specific job in the sports or leisure industry. There are also checklists of certain interpersonal traits you should have to be successful in specific jobs whether it be a fitness center attendant or a disability sports development rep. There are also sidebars for advice for finding a job. The text is full of pictures and different layouts that make it more reader friendly and the information more accessible. There are interviews with professionals who are currently working in the sports or leisure field. In the back of the book there is a further reading section, websites, glossary, and index. A useful set for a school or classroom library. Reviewer: Bobbie Lowe
