Anabel Hernández ha logrado replantear el escrutinio público de los hombres del poder en México con investigaciones periodísticas centradas en la denuncia de la corrupción. Fue reportera fundadora de Reforma (1993-1996) y Milenio (1999-2002). En 2002 ganó el Premio Nacional de Periodismo por su investigación acerca del llamado «toallagate». En 2003 Unicef le dio un reconocimiento por una serie de reportajes sobre la esclavitud sexual infantil en Estados Unidos. En 2002 se integró al equipo de investigaciones especiales de El Universal. De 2006 a marzo de 2012 colaboró con la revista electrónica Reporte Índigo. Actualmente sus reportajes pueden leerse en Reforma y Proceso. En marzo de 2012, en París, Francia, la Asociación Mundial de Periódicos y Editores de Noticias (wan-ifra) le otorgó el Premio Pluma de Oro de la Libertad.
