Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
D.B. Bylund
...This book appropriately seeks to provide an informed view of unwanted drug effects in order to make it possible to assess the potential benefits versus the potential risks of the drug to the patient. This objective is thoroughly met. ...The book covers essentially all drugs and drug classes currently used in clinical medicine. It is comprehensive with 49 chapters, including a chapter on the increasing important alternative (or complementary) therapies, and a chapter on miscellaneous agents and medical devices. Comprehensive indexes of drugs and of side effects are included. ...This encyclopedic and authoritative book will be of use to residents and practitioners in all specialties of medicine and pharmacy. This is an excellent and needed update of the venerable tome on adverse effects of drugs. A limited but systematic search of therapeutic drugs did not uncover any significant omissions.

...When information in relation to adverse effects of medicinal products is required this book is, in my view, one of the best sources available.

...is a valuable reference for doctors, pharmacists, or any health professional wanting an informed view of undesired drug effects. It is essential to pharmacy library collections.

Reviewer: David B. Bylund, PhD (University of Nebraska Medical Center)
Description: This is the newest edition of the now classic reference work on the adverse effects of drugs. Each chapter covers a therapeutic group of drugs and starts with a monograph that discusses the group or the prototype drug. This is followed by shorter discussions of individual drugs. The thirteenth edition was published in 1996.
Purpose: This book appropriately seeks to provide an informed view of unwanted drug effects in order to make it possible to assess the potential benefits versus the potential risks of the drug to the patient. This objective is thoroughly met.
Audience: This encyclopedic and authoritative book will be of use to residents and practitioners in all specialties of medicine and pharmacy.
Features: The book covers essentially all drugs and drug classes currently used in clinical medicine. It is comprehensive with 49 chapters, including a chapter on the increasing important alternative (or complementary) therapies, and a chapter on miscellaneous agents and medical devices. Comprehensive indexes of drugs and of side effects are included.
Assessment: This is an excellent and needed update of the venerable tome on adverse effects of drugs. A limited but systematic search of therapeutic drugs did not uncover any significant omissions. The usual typographical errors and minor omissions cropped up, but this is not unexpected for a book of this size. For example, mecillinam is missing from the index. Although the American spelling is generally used for common words (estrogen vs. oestrogen), it is interesting that the British designation is often used for drug names (adrenalin(e) vs. epinephrine) mesalazine vs. mesalamine). Unfortunately, the American spelling is not always cross-indexed.
