Overview

Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official full-length is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album. The records' packaging would even slot together, making the eventual Mezmerize/Hypnotize whole. Appropriately then, there's an intro to System's first new material since 2001's brilliant Toxicity. On "Soldier Side" Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian harmonize as they do throughout the record, and Malakian's guitar has a mournful, Eastern air. But it's just a lull before "B.Y.O.B.," a thrash assault pierced with rabid and incredulous screams. "Why do they always send the poor?" Suddenly the gears switch, and the song stomps in crunchy half-time as its lyrics riff with a sick grin on cultural ignorance. The government's lying, System's saying, but "Blast off!/It's party time." The vocal exploration between Tankian and Malakian on Mezmerize is a thrill -- they spur each other on like a two-headed hardcore hero. Their intermingling voices make "Cigaro" more aggressive, frantic, operatic, and totally bananas; they'd be triumphant over the break in "Violent Pornography" if they weren't spitting out lines like "Choking chicks and sodomy." The fantastic "Pornography" is a rusty shiv of absurdity, another example of System's ability to effectively skewer society with little more than hyper guitar, blistering percussion, and weird turns of phrase. Their volatile mix of righteousness, wordiness, odd meters, and thrash has balanced System's activism since their self-titled debut, making them "unique heavy music" over the much more problematic "unique, heavily political music." And Mezmerize doesn't fail to be unique. "Old School Hollywood" essays the bizarre experience of a celebrity baseball game ("Tony Danza cuts in line!") over keyboard effects from "Beat It" and a brutally simplistic rhythm, "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song" is more twisted-tongue histrionics and explosive playing, and Tankian and Malakian's harmonies are the catalyst (again!) for making "Revenga" a truly feral epic. System of a Down -- what's another adjective for "awesome"? [Columbia released a clean edition.]

To the idiot that wrote that SOAD do not have intelligent lyrics, you are sadly mistaken my friend. They're music is indeed hard to interperate to the untrained ear, but once you get it, you'll hear songs about bad politics, retarded sex crazed Americans, wool being pulled over our eyes, etc. Amazing stuff.

SYSTEM HAS OUT DONE THIS TIME. THIS NEW ALBUM IS THE BEST ALBUM EVER! I DON'T HAVE A FAVORITE SONG BECAUSE THERE ALL SO GOOD! I RECCOMEND THAT YOU BUY THIS ALBUM WHEN IT COMES OUT NEXT WEEK. P.S. CHEERS TO DARON MALAKIAN FOR SCREAMING THE F WORD ON SNL.

Some serious growth on the part of the band. They are definitely drawing from some diverse influences. I see a little bit of everything from Slayer to Mike Patton era Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. Its notably different from their other releases. Some songs are mediocre, but overall, I enjoyed this release. I like the Daron Malakian (guitar player) directed approach.

I got this CD a day before it was released in stores because I pre-ordered it and haven't stopped listening to it!!! This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time. I'm really looking forward to Hypnotize (the second part of this double album) coming out. I highly recommend buying a copy.

the only problem i have with this album is its ungodly shortness. but in this albums case, that deosn't matter becasue its so intense you'd get burned out. Musically, it blows all other SOAD away, because in my opinion all of SOAD's old work seemed like half songs, like ideas just thrown in. Every song on Mesmerize is memorable.. and awesome

This may........no this is THE worst thing I have ever listened to. I can not even call it the worst music, because this is not music. I thought rap, opera, country and disco was bad.............this tops them all. I believe this would recieve rave reviews if it were released as a comedy album, but not the rock venue. I have listened to a lot of music over the years, and this is a joke. I could get a few guys together and sound as funny as these morons for sure. I can not believe anyone would spend a dime or like a track on this..........truly histerical release.I do not think I heard a difference between any of the titles. They sound the same on each track. They should change their name to system of a downer.

i've been a rock and rap fan since the day i was born. i've listened to the greatests from jimmy hendrix to metallica now i have to say since the day system of a down came out, they are now a member of the greatest rock bands ever.

When I bought this album I expected more than songs where they just talk about getting high off of cocaine and stupid things like that. Once I started to actually listen to some of the songs, I realized how stupid it actually was. The Lyrics and vocals...EVERYTHING was really horrible. Dissapointing that system of a down would actually make another album that was so stupid!!! I'd think that actually realize how horrible their albums were and for once make a decent album (which I'm sure they could do if they only used their heads). I mean who really likes stuff that they do in this album?? This is just another album for those obsessed MTV watchers just trying to be cool. Wouldnt recommend to anyone EVER!!

Bottom line. This album is much more than most people can handle or understand. People are used to getting fed "music" that passes easily through their brainless heads so that there's nothing left but simple, idiotic excuses for art!! God forbid a band actually create something so original, so complex, so utterly unique that it leaves most people left stammering with nothing better to say than, "uh, uh, it sucks. It doesn't even sound like music." If this is your opinion of the album then you're one of two things: either a fan of Bo Bice or completely missing the point. If you don't like this album, you don't get it!!!! Get it?? This album rules. Sorry it doesn't sound like Creed or Mudvayne. The guys in SOAD are simply too talented to sound so contrived!!!!!!!!!!

This cd is one of the best metal albums that i have heard in years. Its fast paced in your face metal.it starts off with the intro wich gets you ready for the rollercoaster ride that your about to experience then the opening riffs of BYOB start and WOW your instantly blown away, then its followed by Revenga personally my favorite track off the whole album the lyrics and the vocals are awesome in this track its so good!!!!.Then cigaro a good track too i know many people out there think the lyrics are dumb but its supposed to be symbolic of America and its mentality really good track. Then theres radio/video a really odd song but really good you'll be addictive to this track trust me!.Then the songs that follow such as the cocaine and violent pornagraphy are really catchy tunes the guitars and drums ,vocals and the lyrics are perfectly the executed on these songs that you'll be singing or humming or headbangigng to this songs wherever you are. Then Question, one of the best tracks of this album or probably one of system of a downs best track is so well composed that you cant help but apprecciate the talent of this band.SAD STatue is probably my least favorite track of this album dont get me wrong this song is not bad at all but compared to the other songs off this album is my least favorite. Then finally theres the Hollywood songs theyre really excellent especially Old School Hollywood it has a bit of a techno feel to it .Overall this cd is an excellent outstanding cd it shows the bands ability to be creative and the ability to change ..just excellent!!!!

Im really amazed with the album, it made my jaw drop. I love it! so you should really check it out if you haven't. These guys are original and amazingly talented, i haven't heard anything i didn't enjoy by them.

Good, catchy album. All the songs have been playing through in my head for a few days now. My problem is that the bass on this album is non-existant 1/2 the time, and the drum beats during the chorus are always the same. The big improvement was the two vocalist idea. My favorite track has to be Lost in Hollywood or Violent Pornography. Ignore BYOB, that's the standard terrible single song.

System of a Down since 2001 have been a source of unique rap/rock elements all their own. Mezmerize is no different. With extra surprises such as Daron's screechy vocals along with the punk/grunge guitar work and swift bass beats, this tops alot of the new metal of 2005. Some think this album is loads of heavy garbage and a cliched genre. But the antics of SoaD are so great, they don't let any true fan down. To some this is one of the best albums out there (to people who think every new album is the best ever). From B.Y.O.B. and on live a disc of rap metal and twisted hardcore. Well polished and an interesting CD case. I give this piece of work 4 stars. It's solid, but not perfect.

This is--in my opinion--the best System of a Down album to date. I loved nearly every track on this album and listened to the entire CD over and over again. Now. For those who think that SoaD's music sucks because their lyrics "are stupid", please understand that many times they are MEANT to be stupid. One song starts off with "My c**k is much bigger than yours"; another ends in "Don't eat the fish". That these lyrics aren't ground-breakingly intelligent doesn't mean that the people who wrote them are stupid. They are meant to make you laugh, to make you think. Another thing I can't stand is the fact that some people say "oh, they're horrid, they sing about cocaine" just because one of the songs on the album--ONE--is titled "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song". The song isn't about cocaine, okay. Please actually -listen- to it before making your sweet little judgments.

O.k I don't know what is wrong with you people but "Mezmerize" is one of the best albums I have heard lately. And I am not easily impressed. It is different which is great, because I get tired of the same old garbage over and over again. If it really sucks then why did it debut at #1 on the charts? It DEBUTED not climed into the top spot. The songs are awesome, the lyrics are kick rear. I highly recomend getting it, you have to hear it yourself.

Since i bought this album i just cant see myself taking it out of my cd player(I just can't!!).The music is so raw and unique that you cant help but loving this album. And when you try to listen to another cd you view it as plain and boring because this cd will have a guaranteed impact on your music taste.I love System of a Down!!!!!!

System of a Down's music is loud, insane, and wildly beautiful. Daron Malakian is an alien, and we should all realize how lucky we are to be blessed by his art. Not that he couldn't do it with out Serj, Shavo, or John, but we have a possible legendary recording on our hands, and we've only heard the half of it. Everyone of these first eleven songs is spectacular. Pure, mad genius. Fascinating.

Well, i will always have a space in my heart for toxicity, i think that this album is one of the better of SOAD's other albums.

System yet agains puts out a great cd! With a singles like B.Y.O.b. and Cigaro how can you not resist this band? System brings the heavy metal sound along with a unique sound that i have only heard from them. Mezmerize proves that a heavy metal band can still put an album on the charts.

i was really disapointed with this album. its ok at first but after about the second time u listen to it it gets old and boring. evrybdy seems to like B.Y.O.B. but i think that song definetly gets old fast. I think this cd had potential but didnt follow through.

This album was a major disapointment. I figured theyd make a better album than the last but instead they made one that was even worse than steal this album. Some of the songs are just plain annoying. Like violent pornagraphy gets old as soon as you start to listen to it. Plus, their so called hit B.Y.O.B. is another song that gets old really damn fast. I think system of a down needs to really think before they make their next album and think about righting better lyrics and better music.

This is one of those cd's I get in trouble by the old lady for listening to too much. It's hard not to like this style of music and SoaD change styles more times in one song than a Christina Aguilera hairdo. There are very few bands that have affectively mixed rap-sounding bass with heavy metal guitar, but SoaD is able to do it with ease. One wouldn't be unhappy buying this cd.

I also thought this album would be so much better than it was, however, I had to force myself to listen to the majority of it. Very disappointed, expected so much more from them.
