Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Hyo-Chun Yoon, MD, PhD (University of Utah School of Medicine)
Description: This CD-ROM of 106 interesting cases represents a broad spectrum of radiologic gastrointestinal interventions.
Purpose: The aim is to acquaint the user with a number of different interventional procedures associated with the gastrointestinal tract. In the CD-ROM format, the material can be reviewed quickly and efficiently. The accompanying text has some of the salient points regarding the diagnosis and interventions in a concise and clear manner.
Audience: The resident in radiology or the practicing radiologist who has not or does not routinely perform these types of procedures will find this CD-ROM quite helpful. Compiled by one of the foremost authorities of interventional radiology, the information presented here reflects the tremendous experience of authors.
Features: A wide variety of interventional procedures using fluoroscopic, ultrasound, and CT guidance are presented. Topics include visceral biopsies, drainage catheter placements, feeding tubes, and even celiac plexus nerve blocks. Brief histories are presented for each case with corresponding diagnostic images. Methods for intervention are then presented. For those who want more of a challenge, there is a quiz mode that queries the user about which intervention or approach would be most appropriate. A search function allows users to pick topics that may be most relevant to their current needs. The program is simple to install and easy to use.
Assessment: This user-friendly CD-ROM contains a broad spectrum of interesting radiologic gastrointestinal interventions, but does not include some of the more complex procedures such as TIPS, embolization, or RF ablation. Busy users can quickly find those topics most relevant to their needs using a simple search function. The principal limitation of the current version is the lack of references that a user might turn to for additional information on a particular subject given the brevity of the CD-ROM text.
