Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
Narrated by a young boy named Marcus, this story about his best friend, Robby, presents a child's-eye view of ADHD. Marcus lets readers know that while Robby sometimes has trouble waiting patiently in a line or remembering his schoolbooks, he still has the ability to be a great friend. Marcus describes Robby's joke-making capabilities and his noteworthy efforts on the basketball team. Colorful cartoon illustrations playfully add a light touch to a sometimes difficult subject. In addition to the storyline, small side bubbles pepper the book offering additional information about AHDH. From them readers will learn that about one in 25 children in the United States has the condition and that those who do often enjoy new ideas and adventure. Beyond the bilingual text, the book also contains a short index and a glossary that defines important words like "concentrate," "distracted," and "impatient." Told from an ability rather than deficiency standpoint, this book could help children better understand classmates who have ADHD. Reviewer: Ramirose I. Attebury
