In many ways, William Shakespeare is one of the most prolific authors in world literature. His work has produced an innumerable amount of reflections, aphorisms, thoughts of great beauty, and verses of enormous poetic strength. Ángel-Luis Pujante, a translator and scholar of Shakespeare's work, offers here a valuable selection of his most important quotes. This anthology reflects the impressive variety of registers exhibited in the works of the English bard. In this sense, it aims to correct a historical bias that only allowed access to the serious, wise, and sententious Shakespeare, and, without hiding the great humor present in his works, it offers an image of the author that fits the wonderful multifaceted nature of the great English playwright.

In this edition, each quote is accompanied by the title of the work, the act and scene from which it comes, as well as the name of the speaking character and, when convenient or necessary, a brief contextual note. Hijo de un comerciante de lanas, se casó muy joven con una mujer mayor que él, Anne Hathaway. Se trasladó a Londres, donde adquirió fama y popularidad en su trabajo; primero bajo la protección del conde de Southampton, y más adelante en la compañía de teatro de la que él mismo fue copropietario, Lord Chamberlain's Men, que más tarde se llamó King's Men, cuando Jacobo I la tomó bajo su mecenazgo.

William Shakespeare was an English playwright and poet, considered one of the greatest writers of all time. The son of a wool merchant, he married Anne Hathaway, an older woman, at a young age. He moved to London, where he gained fame and popularity in his work; first under the patronage of the Earl of Southampton, and later with the theater company he co-owned, Lord Chamberlain's Men, which was later renamed King's Men when James I took it under his patronage.

His work is a compendium of the feelings, pain, and ambitions of the human soul, highlighting the fantasy and poetic sense of his comedies, and the realistic detail and character treatment in his great tragedies. Among his notable titles are Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest.

Ángel-Luis Pujante (Murcia, 31 de mayo de 1944) es un destacado filólogo y traductor español, especializado en la obra de William Shakespeare. Es catedrático emérito de Filología Inglesa en la Universidad de Murcia y ha dedicado gran parte de su carrera a la traducción y estudio de las obras de Shakespeare, así como a su recepción en España y Europa. Pujante ha traducido numerosas obras de Shakespeare al español, incluyendo Hamlet, Romeo y Julieta, El rey Lear y La tempestad. Su traducción de La tempestad le valió el Premio Nacional de Traducción en 1998. Además, ha publicado varios estudios y ediciones críticas sobre la presencia de Shakespeare en la cultura española y europea.

Ángel-Luis Pujante (Murcia, May 31, 1944) is a distinguished Spanish philologist and translator, specializing in the works of William Shakespeare. He is an emeritus professor of English Philology at the University of Murcia and has dedicated much of his career to translating and studying Shakespeare's works, as well as their reception in Spain and Europe. Pujante has translated numerous Shakespearean works into Spanish, including Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, and The Tempest. His translation of The Tempestearned him the National Translation Award in 1998. Additionally, he has published several studies and critical editions on the presence of Shakespeare in Spanish and European culture.
