Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Sulock
Mia St. Clair aims to follow her dreams. Rather than pursue the skating path paved by her older brothers who play hard core ice hockey, Mia strives to become an elegant figure skater. This progressive utopia, told as a first-person narrative, includes common conflicts, such as the financial strain her family experiences as they struggle to pay for her lessons. But Mia's real conflict is within herself. She has difficulty adapting to a new coach, learning how to compete as a solo figure skater, and ultimately pushing herself to improve and be the best figure skater possible. At times, the narrative feels a bit too mature. Mia makes decisions that are wise and well-disciplined beyond her ten years of age. Still, this can be overlooked as Mia's world provides a positive role model for growing girls. The text is a bit longer than most "American Girl" novels, and it includes a nonfiction section entitled "Real Girls, Real Letters" about girls competing in sports and developing their talents. This is the first of two books in the "2008 Girl of the Year" series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Sulock
School Library Journal

Gr 2-5

In Mia, the 10-year-old trades her hockey gear for figure skates. As a beginner, she isn't the best but she's spunky, hardworking, and truly loves to skate. She doesn't give up and is finally able to perform in her first show. In Bravo, Mia !, she is chosen to go to a regional competition. After setbacks of not being able to afford new skates and a costume and battling her own case of nerves, the child is able to take the ice and give it her all. The second story is more entertaining-Mia as Zuzu the Squirrel, clothing-store mascot, is hilarious. Readers also get a closer look into the world of competitive figure skating. Illustrations for both books look like digitized photos and are mostly of Mia with her family or free skating. While the stories themselves are universal, non-skaters would benefit from visuals of the different jumps and technical moves described in the stories. There is also a description of an ice rink "built to look like a Swiss chalet" that needs a picture. Overall, both stories are well written and fun. Mia is an American Girl whom readers will be cheering for on and off the ice.-Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

I love this book. Its about trying to do your best and find your talent. I think you should get it right away and then read the next. I also love the full-color pictures. Follow my advice and buy it. Then click yes if you like it.

    Great book!

Mia is beautifully written by Mr. Yep. I am a figure skater, and the book is so inspiring, considering mia is younger and better than me.
