Meet the Author

Vicki Hendricks is the author of noir novels Miami Purity, Iguana Love, Voluntary Madness, Sky Blues, and Cruel Poetry. Ken Bruen is the two-time Shamus Award-winning author of the Jack Taylor crime novels, the Brant series, and London Boulevard, soon to be a major motion picture, written and directed by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed). He lives in Galway, Ireland. Megan Abbott is the Edgar Award-winning author of Die a Little, The Song Is You, and Queenpin. She also edited Busted Flush Press' female noir anthology, A Hell of a Woman. Her Damn Near Dead (Busted Flush Press) short story, "Policy," was the basis for her Edgar-winning novel, Queenpin. She has a Ph.D. in English and American literature.

    Sleazy but compelling

    I got this book as a library discard and I read it twice, so it engaged me. Vicki Hendricks writes sex scenes like a horny young man, and although some of them were flirting with the inability to suspend my disbelief, I stuck with Ms. Parlay's sex drive. She must have been a contortionist in a previous lifetime: I am not going to tell you the positions she works her way into! Hendricks is not nearly as linguistically quirky as Elmore Leonard, but the blend of topless dancer, southern FLorida, dry cleaner and murder is a match for me. This writer has a bizarre voice in the murder, noir genre. Great title--and the setting in the cleaning store is clever. I liked it. Think it would make a good movie; anyone want to do it with me?

    Where was the noir?

    Bought this book on a lark due to the publisher's write up, hyping sex, crime and overall noirish story. Instead, I found a very light, elementarily written book heavy on female version of porn. Not much to recommend it - not a thriller, not a tittilater.
