Overview

Since her first day on the Miami Herald, rookie reporter Deborah Jones has been agitating for a shot at one particular story.

William Craig is on Death Row, convicted of killling Senator Jack O'Neill's only son. There is no question of his guilt. Craig murdered the young man who was acquitted of raping his granddaughter.

There are only five weeks and one day until his execution. And Craig has not given a single interview.

Deborah Jones has assembled a whole dossier on the case, including court transcripts and every newspaper clipping. She wants to know what prompted Craig to exact revenge. And she has her own, very personal reasons for wishing to uncover the truth.

Managing Editor of the Herald Sam Goldberg is well aware that Senator O'Neill has powerful friends. The two men have crossed swords on a number of occasions. But against his better judgement, he decides to give Deborah a chance to prove herself. Only with one warning - 'Be careful. Florida may be the Sunshine State to most people. But it's not. It's a swamp. Don't ever forget that.'

I completely agree with the March 12, 2015 reviewer. This author stands on her soap box and preaches about racism, for almost the entire book. She also puts down farmers as crackers and behind the times because they farm. Just where does her food come from? I guess she only eats out of cans and the stuff in the cans grows there magicaly in the cannery, by pixies. The prolog was the best part of the book. The book is stand alone with good editing. I admit to skipping pages. This book is graphic, pretty violent and could not maintain any level of interest for me. For adults. If the author had not been so biased against races, other then African Americans, this novel would have been so much better. Not chick lit. Adult topics.

As a mystery it was ok, but the author was too busy on her soap box about racism for it to be great. The first half of the book dealt mostly with racism and how racist it was in the south and it was soooo bad in the south. I really wont be reading anything else by this author again. If she left her politics out of her books maybe they would be better.

Only got about 20 pages into the book before I decided to delete it.

No wonder this book only cost 2.99. Not even worth that much. We are all aware of the terrible racisim in this country, but this author needs to get off her soap box. Can't recommend at all.

A great book. I am glad it ended the way it did. I don't want to give the plot away. Lots of twist to the story.

Pretty good writing but sort of a "formula" plot. It was interesting enough to finish but not what I would call a really good book.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I found that the story line was fairly straight forward, however it kept you intrigued with what additional information would come to light. I disagree with some of the other reviews on this novel as there is no graphic sex scene within the first 20 pages, and the novel is written by a male. I will say that this book is centered around a rapist and what his crimes led to for many people. That being said this novel is definitely not for everyone, however I did not find anything within the story to be overly graphic or distasteful. The author does discuss racism in the South and shows how that affects the careers, and lifestyles of his characters. Personally being from the South I found the author to be fairly honest about how certain areas are and the ways in which minorities are treated.
