Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A boy named Miami and a teacher named Miss Amerita Spraggins spar for control of the classroom in this middle grade chapter book in the "Road to Reading" series. Miami is upset that his former teacher is gone, and does not want to give her prim and proper replacement a chance. When she ends up moving into his neighborhood and sticking up for his sister, he decides she's not so bad after all. Readers can hear the author's voice, but it does not always match the prior knowledge typically brought to the story by middle grade readers. For example, the authors use language such as "I can hang with the sniffing," but then describe the teacher as worse than a "1950's B-movie monster." While some children will relate to the street-smart jargon, those same children will probably fail to understand the context of such comparisons. Nevertheless, the situations and dialogue are engaging, and young readers may overlook these problems within the text. The illustrations are vivid additions to the novel, and reflect popular and familiar scenes. The series is graded using a mile marker key indicating short chapters, illustrations interspersed in the novel, and additional titles involving the same characters. 2002, Golden Book,
