Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
Certainly one of the most popular music artists, if not the most popular, Michael Jackson epitomizes talent, charity, and artistry. Krohn's work in the "Gateway Biographies" series is very objective and presents the "King of Pop" in a fair, unbiased manner. Not without controversy, Michael Jackson has been in the public eye most of his life. Beginning in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children, Michael showed a talent beyond his years at a very young age, impressing such superstars as Diana Ross and Berry Gordy. It was this maturity, confidence, and charisma that translated into a solo performer. Chronicling Michael's life through his release of Thriller, the premier of his trademark moonwalk, and his fashion presence, Krohn goes on to present Michael in a more humble light. His humanitarian efforts are still remembered today, with probably the most successful "We are the World" campaign in 1985 to benefit hunger victims in Africa and the United States. As successful as Michael was, there were disappointments in his life as well. Feeling he had no privacy, Michael was often portrayed as strange and misunderstood. For a time Michael stepped out of the spotlight but returned by announcing a new tour in 2009—only months before his untimely death. This is a well done biography of a unique individual who paved the way for many African-American artists and raised the musical bar for the entire world. Following the text are a time line of Michael Jackson's life, resources to discover more about this amazing talent, but also an un-proofed index that unfortunately presents a couple of errors. However, those are forgivable, given the subject and the broad range of a magnificent lifetime of achievements fulfilled and talent shared with the world. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young

Gr 4–6—Krohn traces the performer's life from his Indiana childhood, his rise to fame with The Jackson 5, and his solo career to his death in 2009. Factual yet descriptively written, the book sets the scene with eight-year-old Jackson about to perform in his first talent show with his older brothers. Accompanied by large, colorful, and clear photographs throughout, the narrative takes readers on the journey of Jackson's incredible success and fame while handling the more difficult aspects of Jackson's life, such as molestation charges and drug abuse, in an age-appropriate, straightforward manner. A wide-ranging look at the celebrity's life and legacy.—Sarah O'Holla, Village Community School, New York City
