    Beneath the Surface

If you are looking for an interesting non-fiction book about a real sports hero you will love Beneath the Surface by Michael Phelps. Phelps tells his story of incredible swimming success from the time he started swimming competitively in elementary school until his record breaking Athens Olympic swims when he was only 15. Clearly Michael has worked very hard for all of his success. He has a lot of natural talent too and he feels very lucky to be where he is today. I loved this book because as an age group swimmer I was able to relate to a lot of his early experiences and dream about his Olympic successes. One thing I really liked about the book was Michaelâ¿¿s description of his age group experiences. He described his coach at NBAC as one who really pushed him to get better. He was scared of the coach but knew that his coach was only pushing him so hard because he saw the potential in Michael. The coach never really told him how talented he thought Michael could become but he kept encouraging him to improve and stick with it. I also could relate well to this description and the description of his early races and workouts- he was really fast even as a kid! There were a lot of pictures in the middle of the book that showed Michael as a young swimmer and as an Olympic champion. The pictures rally brought the story to life for me. One thing that I learned about Michael was that he struggled early with ADHD and the exercise from swimming helped him to channel some of his energy. One major theme that carries throughout the book is how grateful Michael is for all of the support he has from his family and friends. H was able to talk to his Mom a lot even when he travels to far away meets and really relies on her support. The book was really fascinating to me because as a swimmer I could picture all of his workouts, all of the intervals and I knew how hard the practices actually were and how fast he was swimming. The book concludes with a note from Michael about his recent driving while drunk ticket. He explains what a huge mistake he made and how wrong it was. I admired the way he could be so honest after such a difficult experience. The book was really inspiring! If you want to read an exciting book about a real sports hero then this definitely is the book for you.

    Michael Phelps; Beneath the Surface

This book Beneath the Surface by Bob Costas tells Michael Phelps's journey through this life from the beginning to where he is today. It tells you about the many hardships he went through from his parents splitting up when he was young, to his sisters eating disorder. This book lets you experience all the excitement, fear, and determination Michael has had throughout his swimming career. If you have ever wondered what it was like to be in someone else¿s shoes for a day, or have ever wondered how much Olympic athletes do to make it there, then I suggest this book for you. So learn up close and personal about Michael Phelps¿s journey to becoming and eight time gold medalist.

    :D

I really enjoyed reading this book. I didn't only read it because Im a HUGE fan but because I knew there was always more to him. This book had great details oh his life journey, not only on swimming but also on his personal life. Im not a swimmer or athlete but I am someone who always needs motivation. After reading this book, he gave me an uplifting motivation for self motivation. Michael's courage and hardwork encouraged me to one day become the best in what I do. So it also shows that you don't have to be an athlete of any kind to read this book. It'll inspire you in some way :).

    a nice surprise

This is one of the better athlete autobiographies of recent years.Michael tells his own story very well.He comes across as intelligent and very articulate. He also seems to be very mature. It becomes clear that he hasn't had an easy life, and that he's had to grow up very quickly in the public eye.You also sense his deep knowledge and love of,as well as enthusiasm for,his sport and his desire to raise its recognition in the United States.I like his comparison of how swimming is treated here(as mostly a leisure or fitness activity)and in Austrailia (where it's practically a national obsession and swimmers are gods). This is an excellent book that everyone will enjoy.

    olympic gold medalist

This book is amazing because I am a swimmer myself. This book inspires you to go for it and don't give up. This story of the olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps is just amazing. It inspires me to work harder so I can achieve my JO (junior olympic) times for my age group and move on to the olympic team.

An enjoyable account of Michael's life and hard work to become an Olympic Gold Medal Winner

I really enjoyed Michael's story which detailed his hard work and the fun and triumphs along the way to his becoming an Olympic Gold Medal Winning swimmer. I learned a lot about the sacrifices of his family, especially his mother, and his relationship with his coach. It was interesting to hear how Michael and his swimming coach Bob Bowman fought along the way to triumph to get the best out of Michael and how competitive Michael really is. I also enjoyed learning about Michael's relationships with his father and sisters and other swimmers. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Michael Phelps and all the hard work it has taken to become the great Olympic swimmer he is.
