Children's Literature
This "Land of Liberty" series entry includes information about the state's geography, weather, history, government, economy, and people. Text is straightforward and informational, unmarred by italicized vocabulary (although there is a glossary), and current with today's newspapers. Sidebars, maps, an almanac of statistics, a timeline of important events, famous quotes, trivia facts, a recipe that applies to the state's agricultural strengths, and reader-pleasing notes about pro and college sports as well as hunting and fishing, are featured. Illustrations get the job done and depict buildings, famous people and archival material, and are shortly captioned. Special sidebar sections include information about naming of Michigan from two possible Native American sources, Chief Pontiac and the legend of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the statewide mandate to connect every resident to the Internet, and the importance of Detroit to the state. Useful for report writers, the information is easily locatable, with an index, more suggested informational but not fiction-based reading, and one Internet site that is an omnibus location set up and updated by the publisher to key readers to useful sites with more information about Michigan. 2003, Capstone Press,
