K-Gr 2-Serviceable, small-format titles offering very basic information for beginning readers. Both books open with a question to pique the interest of children ("Do you know which state is shaped like a mitten?" "Where can you find a waterfall that is under the ground?"), followed by information on the location of the state (with a map), descriptions of the landscape, and a fact or two about specific cities and other points of interest. Each spread includes one to three large-print sentences, and at least one colorful photograph. The closing pages of each book carry a "Words You Know" section with the words defined only by a photograph. Solid choices for first reports.-Debbie Stewart, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI MITCHELL, Melanie. Ducks. ISBN 0-8225-4602-7. LC 2002003283. ----. Rabbits. ISBN 0-8225-4604-3. K-Gr 2-These titles follow a familiar format-large, clear, color photographs with a single sentence per page. The books conclude with a glossary, which pictures and briefly defines boldfaced words, and an index. The index is only as useful as the text. For example, the entry "kinds of ducks" refers to the text, which reads "There are many kinds of ducks." Four different types are pictured, but not identified. While the books are visually attractive, the overly simplified information will leave readers with more confusion than knowledge.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
