Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Kids love trivia, and this book could make even the most dutiful class assignment lots of fun. Schonberg reveals, for example, that Michigan is the only state with six species of squirrel; that it has more miles of freshwater shoreline than any other state; that as many as 19,000 black bears live in Michigan; and that state residents are never farther than six miles from an inland lake, river or stream, and are never farther than 85 miles from a Great Lake. Fun stuff, even if you have not been assigned to do a report on the state. The author does a fine job of weaving fun facts into much larger contexts, such as ecosystems and endangered species, and her engaging style will keep young researchers reading and learning. Her text is nicely supported by many beautiful color photos of habitats as diverse as wetlands and sand dunes. The book is part of the "Heinemann State Studies" series. 2004, Heinemann Library, Ages 7 to 12.
