Editorial Reviews

Elizabeth N. Shinners
This is the fifth edition of a basic textbook on medical microbiology. Basic principles of medical microbiology, including the nature of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, the control of medically important microorganisms, and the rudiments of clinical laboratory technique are clearly provided by this textbook. This book is appropriate for students of allied health at the high school or technical school level. Students will find the extra features of this textbook very beneficial. Each chapter is preceded by a list of objectives and key words; these key words appear in boldface type throughout the chapter. A list of study questions, both discussion and objective, is provided at the end of each chapter. In addition, achievement reviews are placed in strategic areas to test the student's cumulative understanding of the material. Simple laboratory procedures are also outlined in relevant chapters. The glossary and index are adequate, and various useful appendixes are provided that include such topics as specimen processing and OSHA rules. This book is a useful adjunct to courses in microbiology that target high school or technical school students interested in pursuing careers in areas of allied health. The authors appear to have considerable experience in the training of students at this level. Basic principles of medical microbiology are covered in a direct and succinct manner, and the extra features of this textbook will clearly aid the student's understanding of medical microbiology.
