From The CriticsReviewer: Sue C. Kehl, PhD, D (ABMM) (Medical College of Wisconsin)
Description: Like previous editions, this microbiology review consists of 500 questions, with answers, explanations and references, to prepare individuals for the USMLE Step 1. There have been significant advances in the field of microbiology since the last edition was published in 1999.
Purpose: The purpose is to prepare examinees for the USMLE Step 1 by providing a comprehensive and convenient review of microbiology.
Audience: The book is intended for medical students preparing for the USMLE Step 1. It is also intended for practicing physicians who may wish for a review prior to the USMLE Step 3 or recertification. It can also serve as a review tool for physicians or doctoral level scientists studying for specialty board examinations as well as medical technologists studying for board exams. The author is well respected in the field of clinical microbiology.
Features: The book covers all areas within the field of medical microbiology:virology, bacteriology, physiologic and molecular microbiology, mycology, parasitology and immunology. Questions address laboratory methods as well as appropriate use of laboratory test methods. Case studies are used to facilitate clinical correlation with disease. New molecular testing methods are also presented focusing on methodologic problems as well as utilization. The mycology and parasitology sections, both very visual disciplines, would benefit from better pictures.
Assessment: This book is one of the better USMLE preparatory texts for microbiology. The explanations provide additional background information supporting the answers.
