Microbiome in Head and Neck Cancer: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Therapeutic Implications
Microbiome in Head and Neck Cancer: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Therapeutic Implications, Volume 169 in the Advances in Immunology series, presents an authoritative exploration of how microbial communities contribute to the initiation, progression, and treatment of head and neck cancers. This volume examines the composition and dynamics of the head and neck microbiome, key factors driving dysbiosis, and mechanistic links to oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Chapters highlight emerging microbial biomarkers for early detection, the prognostic value of microbiome profiles, and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including microbiome modulation and AI-based data analysis. Together, these insights provide clinicians, immunologists, oncologists, and cancer researchers with a comprehensive resource on the immunological and microbial interplay underlying head and neck malignancies.

About the Author

Dr.Akhilanand Chaurasia is a Professor (Jr.) and Oral Oncology researcher at King George Medical University, Lucknow, India. My core expertise and research molecular oncology, Oral Microbiome, Oral Medicine, Digital Health, and Artificial Intelligence in health. He has remarkable credit for contributing to academics by publishing high-impact original research (Lancet Oncology, Lancet Digital Health etc) books and book chapters. Hi has significantly contributed in the role of peer reviewers of top-cited journals in oral oncology, editor-in-chief of national journals, associate editor, editor, and editorial board member. For his elite contribution to academics and research, He has been awarded by Union for International Cancer Control Technical Fellowship (FUICC), Switzerland (Geneva), the IADR Star Network Fellowship, the JIPS RCT award, the Volunteering Award, TC White Observership award, Lincoln R. Manson-Hing (Mention)Award and many more.

Professor Mahvash Tavassoli earned her DPhil in Biochemistry in 1987 from the University of Sussex, focusing on cellular senescence and immortalisation. She pursued postdoctoral research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, studying the C-Myc oncogene, and later returned to Sussex to investigate EGFR receptor family kinases in breast and ovarian cancer. In 1990, she received a young career Research Fellowship from Cancer Research UK to study c-erbB2 signalling. Appointed Lecturer at King’s College London in 1995, she became Professor of Molecular Oncology in 2007, leading research on early detection and treatment of head and neck cancers. Her work explores radiotherapy resistance, tumour hypoxia, and cancer cell interactions, utilizing advanced 3D models. Additionally, she collaborates on developing the cytotoxic drug apoptin with the Chemistry Department. Her research is supported by various grants, fostering international collaborations and innovations in cancer treatment
