Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jacki Vawter
The Middle Ages is presented simply in this book, one title in the "History Opens Windows" series. Fourteen brief chapters, each a double-page spread with accompanying illustrations, describe such elements as religion, trade, castles, town life, country life, food and clothing. The plague is treated as the impetus for change among people and the end of the feudal system. The final one page chapter identifies the importance of new ideas that led to a new age, the Renaissance. The text reads easily for upper elementary students. Difficult concepts on government and economics are not dismissed but explained in appropriate language for young historians. Visuals are varied and include maps, a timeline, paintings, tapestry and photographs of objects and drawings. Especially effective are illustrations depicting both the inside and the outside of a monastery, a castle and a merchant's home. Words in bold print are found in the glossary. Additional books to read are listed.
