"The monstrous fun continues."Locus

The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity—and to protect humanity from them. Verity Price is just trying to do her job, keeping the native cryptid population of Manhattan from getting into trouble, and doing a little ballroom dancing on the side. Enter Dominic De Luca, an operative for the Covenant of St. George, and Verity's on-again, off-again boyfriend. When he tells her that the Covenant is sending a full team to assess how ready the city is for a purge, Verity finds herself between a rock and a hard place. Stay, and risk her almost-certain death, or flee, and leave the cryptids of New York with nothing between them and the Covenant.

With allies and enemies on every side, and no safe way to turn, it's going to take some quickstepping for Verity to waltz out of this one. There's just one question on everyone's mind: Is this the last dance for Verity Price? Midnight Blue-Light Special is the second installment of the highly praised InCryptid series.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

If it weren't for the monsters, Verity Price would have been able to pursue her career as an expert tango dancer. But no such luck. Even relatively civilized Manhattan offers no reprieve from the periodic alternating onslaughts of demons and demon-hunters. In this standalone sequel to Discount Armageddon, Price and her "sort of" boyfriend Dominic De Luca grapple with dangerous characters who threaten to take a big chomp out of The Big Apple. A mass-market paperback original.

Publishers Weekly
The second in McGuire’s InCryptid series (after Discount Armageddon) returns to a thoroughly monster-infested New York and hereditary cryptozoologist Verity Price. Price has more than monsters on her mind this go-round, as her boyfriend’s superiors from the monster-hunting Covenant of Saint George are about to descend on Manhattan to check up on his work. While wondering where the handsome fellow’s loyalties lie, Price also has to deal with trying to hide New York’s diverse cryptid population from the incoming hunters, one of whom is a distant cousin of the legendary Price clan out for some very personal revenge. The story is fast-moving and enjoyable, with events whooshing by too fast for the reader to ponder improbabilities. While a several-chapter diversion into the perspective of Verity’s psychic cousin Sarah is a bit disconcerting, the rest of the book is more assured and engrossing than its predecessor and will keep readers hooked. RT Book Reviews
"McGuire kicks off a new series with a smart-mouthed, engaging heroine and a city full of fantastical creatures. This may seem like familiar ground to McGuire fans, but she makes New York her own, twisting the city and its residents into curious shapes that will leave you wanting more. Verity’s voice is strong and sure as McGuire hints at a deeper history, one that future volumes will hopefully explore.”

"Discount Armageddon is an exceptionally well-written tale with a unique premise, fantastic character work, and a plot that just pulls you along until you finish. This is one for the urban fantasy enthusiasts out there—as well as for anyone who wants something different from most anything else on shelves today. Easily one of my favorite books of 2012."
Charlaine Harris
“The only thing more fun than an October Daye book is an InCryptid book. Swift narrative, charm, great world-building . . . all the McGuire trademarks.”

"Seanan McGuire's DISCOUNT ARMAGEDDON is an urban fantasy triple threat - smart and sexy and funny. The Aeslin mice alone are worth the price of the book, so consider a cast of truly ORIGINAL characters, a plot where weird never overwhelms logic, and some serious kickass world-building as a bonus."

"DISCOUNT ARMAGEDDON is a quick-witted, sharp-edged look at what makes a monster monstrous, and at how closely our urban fantasy protagonists walk—or dance—that line. The pacing never lets up, and when the end comes, you're left wanting more. I can't wait for the next book!"

"McGuire returns with book two in her InCryptid series, and if you loved the wisecracking dancer-cum-monster-savior Verity Price from Discount Armageddon, it’s a good bet you’ll also love this second installment.... The developing relationship between Dominic and Verity is one to savor, by turns tender and sharp." —RT Book Reviews

"McGuire has a way with words that transports the reader into the Incryptid world and doesn't let go of you until the end.... Midnight Blue-Light Special is a fantastic read, full of action, suspense, and humor. It’s just flat-out entertaining." —Night-Owl Reviews

Meet the Author

Seanan McGuire is a California-based author with a strong penchant for travel and can regularly be found just about anyplace capable of supporting human life (as well as a few places that probably aren’t). Early exposure to a vast number of books left her with a lifelong affection for the written word, and led, perhaps inevitably, to her writing books of her own, starting somewhere around the age of eleven. The October Daye novels are her first urban fantasy series, and the InCryptid novels are her second series, both published by DAW and bother of which have put her in the New York Times bestseller list. Seanan was the winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer; Rosemary and Rue, the first novel in the October Daye series, was named one of the Top 20 Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Past Decade; and her novel Feed, written under the name Mira Grant, was named as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2010. She also won a Hugo for her podcast, and is the first person to be nominated for five Hugo Awards in a single year. You can visit her at www.seananmcguire.com.

    Pretty Good Read

2nd book in the series and McGuire seems to be settling into the direction she wants to take the series. I think the next book will be better simply for that reason. I liked it and recommend it, and will definitely pick up the next one.

I've liked everything I've read by this author - you should pick up her October Daye series and try the Mira Grant books.

The second of the InCryptid novels, Ms. McGuire has upped the ante and taken a really great world and expanded upon it in entertainingly unexpected ways. The emotional roller coaster that Verity, her friends, and co-workers undergo is as exciting as it is volatile.

Verity's worst fears have come to pass - the Covenant is sending a team to NYC to inspect her boyfriend Dominic's reports/work, and determine how many will be needed to conduct a full-fledged purge.

Once again we are treated to another rollicking adventure through a New York City few humans have ever been aware of - at least not for more than the few minutes it takes them to die. Of course there are humans that work side by side with cryptids and know exactly what they are, but they a few in numbers and certainly don't go around spreading tales about their lives with the cryptids.

Ms. McGuire continues to develop an astounding world, peopled (& creatured) with some truly enjoyable characters. There is mayhem & mischief galore, as well as tender romance and steamy personal relationship building exorcizes. Another coup for Ms. McGuire's latest series. And apparently we get to meet more of the family since the next book or two will focus on a family member other than Verity. For anyone worried about missing Verity, never fear as I'm sure there will still be plenty Aeslin mice!!

Apparently I've left my review for this book on book 2 of the series. I am unsure how to fix that...so, here is my review of book 2!

What a fantastic read! I was biting my nails, on the edge of my seat, and at one point I think I was even holding my breath. For the "FRIENDS" fans out there, my husband even offered to put the book in the freezer. I loved where this journey took Verity and the rest of her family and friends. And it was a very exciting read, so I'm anxious to continue on with the rest of Verity's story.

Nice follow up for the 2nd InCryptod Series
This book definitely builds on the world and the characters introduced in the first book.
The humor is sharper and more prevalent... and don't I but love those mice as much as any other characters in any book ever.

Fun story set in Manhattan, with a unique supernatural take.  I love the parallels to actual zoology, as well as the comparisons to life as a professional ballroom dancer.
