Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A queasy blend of grisliness and New Age unctuousness characterize Pike's latest offering. Terminally ill teens Kevin, Ilonka, Spence and Anya meet each midnight to spin fantastic tales in the candlelit study of their luxurious private hospice. Much of the novel, in fact, is devoted to the Club's stories, which resemble abbreviated versions of over-the-top Pike titles--one sample begins ``Dana was blond and delicious but she'd had a strict upbringing. . . . ''). Most of the stories feature star-crossed lovers Kevin and Ilonka in a variety of different situations and incarnations (Ilonka is convinced that she and Kevin have known each other in many, many previous lifetimes). Ilonka's theory is borne out by her dreams, in which she receives wisdom from an enlightened soul known as the Master. Everybody dies, but not before Ilonka works out her karma. Trivia-obsessed fans of the pseudonymous author (real name: Kevin) will relish the Paul-is-dead, Abbey Road -esque intimations in the novel's dedication, ``To Ilonka.'' Ages 14-up. (Feb.)

    Don't Read If You're Depressed

I¿ve been reading more or less constantly since I was about 4 years old. I¿m 21 now, and I have to say that The Midnight Club was one of the most poignant and touching things I¿ve ever read. Having said that, it¿s very very sad. I mean, it all takes place in a teen hospice. That should give you some idea with what we¿re dealing with here. But just because it¿s sad, that doesn¿t mean it¿s bad. It¿s not. It¿s excellent. Although the story synopsis on the back of the book is rather misleading. I read it back when I was in Middle School and figured it was like the Fear Street books ¿ a murder mystery horror type thing. So I was caught off guard by what I read. The Midnight Club is located in the ¿Teen Section¿ of Barnes and Noble, but it could just as easily been placed in the mainstream adult areas. This book deals with pretty mature themes like the nature of life and death in some profound ways. It¿s really very touching. And did I mention sad? It wasn¿t what I expected at all, but I was still pleased. And sad. But in a good way.

    Very Enjoyable Book

I'm an adult and I still found this book geared for teens, quite good. It's original and filled with a little bit of every kind of genre. The short stories told durring the Midnight club by it's members are great! The stories told by the five member are cleverly blended into the main plot, providing an excellent read. Definatley recomend to anyone looking for a little adventure!

Finally, some thrillers with depth in it!

I didn't know what to expect with this book. It didn't really look like a whodunnit kind of book. and i was pleased that it wasnt. Unlike some of the past thrillers of other authors, this one doesn't have a mindless killer hacking people up or the typical murder/mystery. This one has depth, feeling, and you can really get to knnow the characters. A nice, refreshing book to read, different from the other stories in this genre. Brava!

An old fan with renewed interest

I am only 22, but I was hardly even a middle schooler when I read The Midnight Club. I had been an R.L. Stein and Christopher Pike fan, like most kids my age at that time. But this book, although it still retained the supernatural element to it, was much different than anything I had ever read. It really introduced me into reading books for content, not just a quick scare. It touched me and I cried my eyes out at the end. I can't believe you can still buy it! For an avid reader who is about to get her bachelor's degree in English, I can honestly say this book changed how I viewed the written word, and showed me that there was so much more to reading a book than instant gratification.

    read it, it's sooo sad . . .

I read this book recently and I know I will always remember it. I am at a loss of words for its description. Let me just say it was devastating, yet beautiful at the same time. The end may bother some, I think it was perfect. I hope everyone reads this book. It will create a bit of new reality for some, and relate to life for others. Read it.

    The Midnight Club.

The Midnight Club, by Christopher Pike is, in my personal opinion, one of his best books. For me, it started a bit slow, but as I read it, it progressed into a wonderful story. A bit sad at the end, it is still worth reading. Pike is one of the few authors I know who can intertwine horror and despair and make a remarkably beautiful story. The book is tole in the poin to view of a young woman who is living at a hospice. In case you don't know what a hospice is , it's a place where you go to die. You never leave. The young woman, Ilonka, is part of a club, the Midnight Club. This club meets every night at midnight and tells stories that they make up during the day. Then, one by one, the memebers of the club die, and soon, only Ilonka is left. The story is strangely touching, and I highly reccomend it!

    Another script possibility

Sad, provocative, and interesting The Midnight Club is a little boring but will keep you reading just to see if maybe, just maybe Ilonka gets to go home. Does she? Read it, it's great!

    VERY ENLIGHTENING!!!

As with all of Christopher Pikes books this has a sad yet happy ending. They all know they are going to die, but they have hope. It's not unbearably horrible. This book opened me up to a part of myself that I never knew existed, and for that I'm greatful. Really he is the BEST author that ever lived!
