Overview

Though there are a few queasy pop/vocal tracks, Moroder's soundtrack to Midnight Express earns points for an array of exploratory synthesizer pieces (including "Wheel" and "Cacaphoney") as well as its opener, "Chase." One of Moroder's biggest hits, the track bounces back and forth between melodic disco and hypnotic sequencer trance just one step removed from the likes of Tangerine Dream.

This soundtrack may be unpopular because the movie is outdated, but for those who appreciated the film, this soundtrack is a relevant, wonderful and wonderfully composed companion. This album is what you'd expect from Giorgio Moroder, and then some: he really outdoes himself here, with the most emotive and upbeat likes of Chase theme and Istanbul blues. Some of the other tracks takes the listener on a sort of imaginative mind trip, while Love's Theme epitomizes the sad and sentient side of Midnight Express' central theme, especially the vocal rendition.
