Marvin Gaye once said, "When my life suffers, my art prospers." And 1982's MIDNIGHT LOVE, Gaye's first and only full studio album for Columbia Records, proved this statement correct. With the IRS hounding him for back taxes, a second marriage in shambles, and his 21-year relationship with Motown shattered, Gaye retreated to Belgium to record a comeback album. The result was MIDNIGHT LOVE, Gaye's most successful album in a decade -- heralded by the seductive hit single "Sexual Healing." Marvin Gaye once said, "When my life suffers, my art prospers." And 1982's MIDNIGHT LOVE, Gaye's first and only full studio album for Columbia Records, proved this statement correct. With the IRS hounding him for back taxes, a second marriage in shambles, and his 21-year relationship with Motown shattered, Gaye retreated to Belgium to record a comeback album. The result was MIDNIGHT LOVE, Gaye's most successful album in a decade -- heralded by the seductive hit single "Sexual Healing." Apparently, during his exile, Gaye found himself heavily influenced by both the futuristic techno sounds of Kraftwerk check out the gurgling synths on "Midnight Lady" and the steel drum pulse of reggae music "Third World Girl" was a tribute to Bob Marley. In addition to playing many of the instruments, Gaye loaded this masterpiece with biting horn arrangements and the type of mechanical rhythms that later became electro-funk staples. Balancing out up-tempo tracks such as the largely instrumental "Rockin' After Midnight" and the funk-fused "Joy" are ballads including the poignant "'Til Tomorrow" and the optimistic, reverential "My Love Is Waiting." MIDNIGHT LOVE was a surefire sign that this soul legend and musical visionary was embarking on an exciting new chapter in his career -- one that was cut short by Gaye's untimely death in 1984. All Music Guide - Craig Lytle
Larkin Arnold, former CBS Records (Sony Music) senior executive VP, convinced Marvin Gaye to leave his flat in Belgium and sign with Columbia Records; the result would become the soul singer's last album before his untimely death. Of all his number one songs, this album's first release, "Sexual Healing," became his longest running number one single on the Billboard R&B charts (ten straight weeks). With the exception of the guitar, the Washington, D.C. native performed every instrument on this classic hit. Gaye concocted a pioneering percussive sound that was balladic in taste but stimulating in feel. As this project may not be an absolute erotic expression or a socially challenging plea from Gaye as on some of his previous albums, nonetheless, Midnight Love is a classic Marvin Gaye effort. In addition to this project thriving with Gaye's enthusiastic spirit, it has his harmonious background vocals, his stunning vocal arrangements, and his creative penmanship, as he wrote all the selections. [The 2007 'Expanded Edition' includes 13 bonus tracks.]

    A sonic experience

The first disk, The Midnight Love album, is a fine album, but for me it's the second CD that makes this such a special package. The second disk (formally known as "The Sexual Healing Sessions") is a collection of session tapes and early versions of the songs that became the Midnight Love album, but these sessions are presented as an organic whole and have such a powerful grove to it as to make this outtake CD one of the greatest Soul albums of all time. It is really something special. Frankly, I never play the first CD anymore, I put in this second CD and play it several times in a row (especially if I am entertaining a lady).

    The Tragic Life Marvin Gaye

It would have been awsome to hear what he would do next. Gaye had return to the sound and the image that skyrocketed his career, then tragety struck and the music was silenced.
