Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A young boy is drifting off to sleep, or perhaps he is already asleep and all that happens is just a dream. The soft tones of the nighttime illustrations are brightened by the stars that the midnight man tosses into the sky. Hearing him approach on his horse, Harry and his dog give chase, but they never can catch the midnight man. When he finally falls asleep in the fields, his is carried home by the shining, smiling moon who cradles him in her creamy arms.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-In a beguiling, eloquently related nighttime adventure, young Harry and Mister Dog rise from their bed to follow the midnight man, who drifts past on his horse scattering fistfuls of stars that "hang and glitter like flowers of ice." As Harry and Mister Dog follow him, "they tiptoe...past all the snoring doors" to the street, run silently through town, and fall asleep on a wide, starlit moor. The story comes to a comforting conclusion as the smiling moon "slides down the darkness" to carry the drowsy pair back to bed, where they sleep until morning. Faces gleam from the shadows in Andrew's impressionistic, colored-pencil illustrations. Using primarily blues and grays and varying full-page or full-spread scenes with smaller, sometimes sequential panels, the artist gives his dreamscape a cinematic flow. Doherty's sonorous language creates an atmospheric mood, too, with inventive words and images that enhance the sense of mystery.-John Peters, New York Public Library
