Overview

Documenting a March 2002 club performance during a European tour by bass virtuoso David Friesen's Portland, Oregon–based trio, Midnight Mood is as mellow, intuitive, and in-the-flow as the title would imply. The piano is good, and the program is modern mainstream -- iconic jazz compositions by Joe Zawinul (the title track), John Coltrane ("Equinox"), and J. J. Johnson ("Lament"); originals by band members Friesen ("Before and After") and pianist Randy Porter ("Dark Sky"); and evergreens from the Songbook ("How Deep Is the Ocean," "A Time for Love," "East of the Sun," "Come Rain or Come Shine"). Inspired by Friesen's spot-on bass lines and melodic solos and Porter's ability to voice post–Bill Evans vocabulary in his own dialect, the trio -- completely in tune throughout and informed by creative imperatives -- reharmonize without excess and make it all sound fresh.
