Overview

"ONCE UPON A TIME"

IS TIMELESS

In a quiet fishing village seventeen years ago, one lone fisherman rescued a child from the sea. He and his wife raised the girl, Pearl, as their own daughter, never allowing themselves to wonder long about where she came from — or notice her silver hair, usually pale skin, and wide, dark blue eyes.

Pearl grows from a mysterious child into an unusual young woman, not always welcomed in the village. As all the other girls her age find husbands, she has only one friend to ease her loneliness. One very special, secret companion: Prince James.

But their friendship is shaken when trouble erupts in the kingdom — a conspiracy against the royal family combines with an evil enchantment from beneath the sea. Now, just when Pearl and James need each other most, bewitching magic and hints about Pearl's past threaten to tear them apart...forever.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Part of a series that retells fairy tales, this entry offers a new look at Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid." Viguie relates the story of a fisherman caught in a sudden and severe storm who finds a young child in the turbulent ocean. Believing he was meant not only to save the child but also to be saved by her, he and his wife, who cannot have children of their own, adopt the girl and name her Pearl for the single pearl with which she was found. After this introduction, the story jumps to Pearl as a young woman struggling with her obvious physical differences and her extreme fear of, but fascination with, water. Over the years she becomes a close, secret friend of Prince James. This friendship develops into something more when each begins to have feelings neither can explain. Each chapter opens with a quick look at Pearl's wedding, and readers are treated to a story of love, betrayal, murder, and destiny as they are kept wondering if this wedding will ever take place. While some of the plot unfolds predictably, there is enough suspense and drama to keep even the most reluctant readers turning the pages, and the ending will leave readers satisfied that each character ultimately lives happily ever after.

    Beautiful story

It was a beautiful book, pretty much full of everything. It had many twists here and there, so much more to the original. I thought during some parts in the middle and end were ironic that James proposed to, and fell for Faye, instead of Pearl. Pearl and James never even got a chance to kiss, even in her dreams! That, to me, was dissapointing =' I even cried that Pearl was broken hearted with James, but it seems the story is trying to tell us that maybe they werent meant to be. I thought they were. But who else would Faye and Kale marry, they'd obviously die if Pearl and James got engaged. I still thought it was the most captivating story ive ever read, so romantic, sad, but all together beautiful.

    A bit depthless...

I have to be honest. I found this book rather shallow. The characters and the story didn't have any depth. This is probably due to the fact that the novel was rather short and rushed, not giving enough time to really connect with the characters and understand their persons. The story, as well, was rather convoluted and jumbled. It seems as there were were many unnecessary scenes and one too many characters and plotlines introduced considereing the length of this novel. It seems as though several plotlines have been tangled into a short, depthless novel. I don't mean to be cruel. The story could have been wonderful if the plotline was simplified, and if the story was lenthened so there would be more time for exposition. If you want a short, sweet, bit of romance, then it would be a good one. But if you're looking for something more in depth, I'd look elsewhere.

    Awesome retelling

This was a great retelling. I could still see the little mermaid within this story. I wish Pearl would have ended up with James though.:)

    Awesome

I love the Once Upon a Time Series, and this one was awesome! it was a great story, but i didn't really like the ended. I think Pearl should have married Prince James, not Faye.

I have never read this book but I was thinking about buying it and I was looking through the comments to see what other people thought of the book and then I come across TWO comments that hint at or say what the ending was and that it was bad. Guys I would understand if you just said that you didn't like the ending but just saying what happens? NOT COOL!!!!!!!!! Please no more spoilers! Ok? Thank you!

    Sad----ish=(

I felt that the story was over too quickly. I really loved the way Pearl and James were besties! But I can't help feeling that they needed to be together!!!! Faye rushed into love with James............ she didn't need to step between them. Also.... Kale in my mind, was depicted as a sickly pale, silver haired freak. I truly wish Kale and Faye had NEVER even MET Pearl and James...... they would've been so wonderful together!!!!!!!! But I couldn't put this book down. That was cause I thought James was gonna marry Pearl =( =(

    Loved it!!!

Most of the books in this series are very disappointing but I thought that this one was the best and a very good read. I love how she turned things around in this book and kept the reader wondering and hoping and crying and smiling through the entire novel. Although the fight scene with the sea witch was a bit short and underdeveloped and the ending left a desire for more, it was worth it leaves the reader thinking about the story even after the book is closed. I recommended this book to my cousin and she loved it as well.

    Great re-telling with new twists!

This is one of the best in the series! I loved the characters, the way the story took shape with surprises just when you get comfortable with what's happening...I kept counting the remaining pages wondering WHAT was going to happen next!
