Excellent book...I really hope BN decides to offer the author's second book "Bundles of Joy" which Amazon has scheduled to release on 10/25/12!

What a wonderful book! I finished it in just a few days since it was so interesting. It's just amazing to read of the typical maternity experience in the 60s and 70s. So very different than today. Great choice!

I enjoyed Linda Fairley's account of her early career as a midwife more than I expected to. Although the writing style is a bit over-cliched at times, the conversational tone is quite engaging, and it is clear that this is an authentic story by a woman who truly loves her work. This was a Free on Friday selection, but by the end of the book I was so involved with Linda's story that I cheerfully purchased the sequel "Bundles of Joy" and read it with even more pleasure.

Memories will come flooding in if you went into nursing, had a baby or are about to have a baby. Men ought to read this to get an idea about women having babies, their fears and delights. History is shown as the story progresses in how advanced medical care has changed, all for the better.

This is for reviewing books!!!! Normally I don't comment here unless I've read the book but, it's not fair to the book or its author to give it a low rating because you don't like the free friday selection. I'm giving it 5 stars for all the jerks who haven't read it and gave it 1. This was not my favorite selection but it's FREE!!!!!!!! I've read other free friday books that that I wouldn't usually read and been pleasantly suprised. The ones I don't like I just stop reading and delete. So try opening your mind and expanding your knowledge. Another option is to pay for what you want. If that doesn't work for you, try going down to WalMart and see what books they have for free there!

I am going to try this one, as it's free, which I do appreciate. I am sorry to see so many negative comments on the book that is offered for free. The free offering can't be just for a few types of readers. With so many different genres for reading, we must all be patient and let the other reader have a chance at a free boo,. Thank you B&N for doing this. I don't always take the free offering, but then I don't read some types of books.

A fascinating, intimate look into the world of late 60s and early 70s Manchester, UK through the eyes of a young midwife. Amazing how far women have come, and how much ideas of motherhood have changed.

I received this book for the free Friday selection. At first i was a tad bit hesitant because its not normally the type of book i would read.  However that being said i couldn't put it down once i had started. The stories the author told of her experiences ranged from heartbreaking  to hilarious. I found myself unable to put the book down and finished it in a day. Needless to say i will be getting the authors second book.  To all those reviewers who are upset at its choice of free Friday selection maybe you should try to read the book first. You might be  pleasantly surprised like i was.

Good story about becoming a nurse and midwife in the late 60s early 70s. I really learned a lot about this profession and how babies were delivered.
