Mighty Joe Young [Compilation]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Roberta Penn
If you didn’t know singer/songwriter/guitarist Mighty Joe Young passed away in 1998 and that Mighty Joe Young is a compilation of material recorded in the ‘70s, you might jump on the Internet, after hearing the CD, to find out when he was coming to town for a gig. That's how vital and contemporary his sound is. “Chicken Heads” and “Green Light” feature Young’s rowdy but clean funk guitar work, with only a touch of strings letting you know it’s the ‘70s. “Take Over Chicago” and “Big Talk” are fast and slow takes on electric Chicago blues, with Young’s mighty voice crooning and howling on the latter number. Young’s take on “As the Years Go Passing By,” which was featured in the film Ali, is a touch more uptown than Albert King’s version, while “Something on Your Mind,” a Young original, is also in the King vein. Mighty Joe Young was one of those underrecorded artists who has only a slender legacy in the blues recording catalogue. But this stunning collection stands as proof that it’s not just the superstars who shine eternally.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Blind Pig's 2002 release Mighty Joe Young is a compilation that picks from Mighty Joe Young's Ovation releases Chicken Heads 1974 and Mighty Joe Young 1976. These are generally considered to be among Young's best work, yet they have been out of print for years and never have appeared on CD. Thankfully, this collection picks the 12 best tracks from these records, bringing back into circulation the work that showcases Young at his best. While it would have been nice to have these two albums in their entirety in their original running order, the music is so good and so rare, it's nice just to have it out officially, since this is the place to go to hear him at his best.
