Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
India's massive, far-flung historic forts witnessed centuries of battle and empire change, and each structure has a complex history of its own. Baig (consultant, World Monuments Fund, India) and architect and photographer Singh offer a catalog of more than 60 of these forts. Singh's large-scale photographs illustrate both the impressive size of the structures, such as the Amber Fort in Jaipur, and their many intricate details, such as the stonework in the fort at Fatehpur Sikri. Baig draws on legend, literature, archaeological findings, and history to describe each; he specifies the unique features of the site, details its fortifications, and describes some of the enclosed building. First published in India in 2010, this book is written for an audience familiar with Indian history and literature. The glossary of architectural terms is helpful, but a bibliography, timeline, and map of the sites would also have been welcome. VERDICT This is a treasure trove of photographs of Indian forts, but those looking to learn more may be stymied by the text if they are not already well versed in Indian history, literature, geography, and architecture. Nevertheless, the unique focus makes this book a useful addition to the literature of Indian architecture.—Amy Trendler, Ball State Univ. Libs., Muncie, IN
