Overview

Jane Thistle and Phoebe Twigg are as different as two best friends can be. Phoebe has never seen any reason to leave her small Southern hometown, while Jane, the urbane widow of a career military officer, has traveled all over, only recently putting down roots in Tullulah, Alabama.

At times, Tullulah can be a sleepy little town, but no one sleeps through the thunderstorm that knocks down a tree on Jane’s property and uncovers a pile of skeletal remains buried underneath. Jane has some archaeological experience, thanks to all her travels, and knows a few experts. She invites an old friend to come down to Tullulah to have a look and catch up on old times. When tests discount their best theories and point to a far more recent death, Jane and Phoebe find themselves in the midst of some strange happenings.

Mary Saums’s Mighty Old Bones, the second in this delightful series, rattles Alabama with two of the newest and unlikeliest sleuths throughout the southlands.

    I Also Recommend:

    Fun Reading

I put this as one of best cozy mysteries, great characters in Phoebe and Jane, like manner in which each chapter presents views of each character. Putting in touch of paranormal twists adds to the enjoyment of reading. Look forward to third sequel.Definitely plan to add this and first book of series to my personal library for later rereading .

    I Also Recommend:

Loved this book as much as the first one. I would love more Thistle & Twigg mysteries. Just the right amount of suspense and keeps you reading until the last page!

Read the first book of this series and then this one. I loved it! A different take on mysteries that leave you wanting to read until everything is solved! Delightful characters!

Great for a long plane ride

I read this on a flight back from Hawaii. What I found interesting is how the chapters kept switching the two main characters, Jane Thistle and Phoebe Twigg, to first person telling the story in their own way. It flowed pretty well in spite of it and it made a better story in the end as Phoebe described the action in great detail. Had it been Jane telling it in first person, it wouldn't have been as exciting. The character, Phoebe, reminds me of one in the Southern Sisters mysteries by Anne George. She is funny, strong minded, and soft hearted. Jane is pretty cool...the paranormal powers are a bit odd but her abilities to fight using martial arts and weapons are awesome...not that there is a lot of it because there really isn't but what little there is makes it fun.

    What Fun!

Love both ladies--they're my heroes. How cool that they're both wonderfully active seniors. And I find that the change in narration, chapter to chapter from Jane to Phoebe, really brings their characters to life. I do hope Mary Saums continues with the Thistle & Twigg series as I would love to read more.

Chapters rotate between two main characters - doesn't flow well

This was my first read of this series and I don't plan to read any more. I did not like the change of character's narrative every other chapter; nor did I like the personalities of the characters. Plot was ok; nothing special.

    enjoyable small town regional cozy

In normally sleepy Tullulah, Alabama, best friends Jane Thistle and Phoebe Twigg vow to not get involved in any investigation after their recent harrowing experience (see THISTLE AND TWIGG). Instead the duo works together on the upcoming annual Halloween bash hosted at the local library.----------------- While they toil together, a severe thunderstorm causes some damage including uprooting a tree on Jane¿s land. After the storm passes, the two women go outside to assess the damage to Jane¿s property only to find the remains of a human had been buried there. Based on information in the library, Jane and local law enforcement officials believe that corpse is probably part of an Indian burial site. Still experts are asked to confirm the prevalent theory while Jane joins the dig as she has archeological skills amongst her global travels. Meanwhile she and Phoebe discuss the vanishing of a popular senior.---------------------- This enjoyable small town regional cozy is fun to follow due to the strong friendship that contrasts the extroverted and introverted BFs. The story line simmers down two paths that soon link as the amateur sleuths become embroiled with the mysteries of the corpse and the disappearance while also working on the bash. MIGHTY OLD BONES is a fine T&T tale.--------- Harriet Klausner
