Migrant Writing in Sweden: Diversifying from Within
Helena Wulff turns her anthropological eye to the social world of migrant writers and their work in Sweden (and to some extent in New York). Wulff shows how a migrant writer’s career is made, in its variety. At stake is breakthrough and reputation, competition and collaboration, and Wulff shows how a migrant writer’s career can depend on the publishing market and social media, as well as as age, gender, and class. Combining evocative ethnography with a scrutiny of fictional texts and journalist's reports, Wulff argues that these writers educate mainstream Swedes about their own society. These literary and journalistic accounts become therefore significant social commentary, as Wulff shows the enormous impact of literature on society in shaping and reflecting it. Written in an accessible style, Diversifying from Within will be of particular interest to scholars and students in anthropology, sociology, comparative literature, cultural studies and migration studies.
