Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
From the dawn of time, people have moved, seeking safety, economic survival, or improved opportunities for their future. The arrival of refugees in countries not their own due to war, famine, political persecution and other hardship, and the territorial imperatives that give rise to migration, are explored in straightforward, detailed text accompanied by graphs and side bars labeled "Focus On…" and "Eyewitness." Other sidebars labeled "Have Your Say" encourage debate and examination of multiple aspects of an issue related to migration and refugees. Color photographs illustrate and add interest to the text. The thorny questions and concerns attached to these issues are especially relevant today in our culture of instant news and rapid-fire dissemination of opinion. The issues that rise from migration and refugees are presented in global and historical context that promotes understanding and insight. This book is part of "The Global Village" series written to explain how globalization has an effect on world-wide cultural, developmental, and economic issues. It concludes with a list of advantages and disadvantages called "The Great Debate," a list of "Facts and Figures," suggestions for "Further Information" including books, websites and teaching resources, a glossary and an index. It would be a good addition to classes on social and current events, economics, debate classes, and as a resource for AP classes. Reviewer: Hazel Buys

Gr 7-9

This series examines the multifaceted effects of globalization on the world's people. Each author presents the economic, social, political, and environmental repercussions, both positive and negative, of the issue at hand. The high-quality color photographs are accompanied by value-added captions, and charts are clear and helpful in drawing meaning from the text. A closing summary feature called "The Great Debate" reinforces the arguments addressed throughout. Compared to the "Global Questions" series, this one takes sophistication only slightly higher, periodically oversimplifies subject matter, and sometimes fails to indicate sources of statistics.
