Overview

On this diverse and generally interesting (if not essential) CD, keyboardist/composer Dave Grusin performs a five-song suite from his soundtrack of The Milagro Beanfield War along with selections by Harvey Mason, his brother Don Grusin, Hugh Masekela, Marcus Miller and himself. Other than the suite (which has a string section), the music is mostly played by smaller groups, with Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano a major asset on three songs and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela taking a solo on his own "Polina."

I have most of Grusin's recordings, and to me, this one is his best. Aside from his movie scores, Grusin has opened up new fields in contemporary jazz, using his usual beautiful harmonic sense. This CD is long, as CD's go, and has a wide spectrum of moods. Grusin is a master in balancing piano with conventional and electronic instruments.
