Being a Grade 3 Elementary teacher, I am constantly searching to find an appropriate novel to read to my class. As I consider a book, I need to look at several things - like language used, length, appropriate age level - but more importantly, interest for both girls and boys. When I read Michell Plested's, Mik Murdoch: Boy Superhero to my class, they discovered what I already knew from my preread - a perfect fit. Michell's story of a young boy wanting to be a superhero and protect his family and his town of Cranberry Flats from the bad guys, is something my students could connect to. As a child, who doesn't dream of having superpowers - super strength, the ability to fly or leap over tall buildings? Michell's story is wonderfully written, painting wonderful, descriptive pictures that my students had no problems imagining. They followed Mik's escapades with eager ears, always wanting me to "Just read one more chapter!". The problems that Mik faced (bullies, not being sure who to talk to, facing new situations) were situations that my students could easily relate to. On more than one occasion, I would stop reading so as a class, we could have a discussion to decide if Mik was on the right path or if he should do something different. Overall, we all enjoyed Mik Murdoch, and I know from my student's reaction, this book will be one that I read to my class each year.
