Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
The Alden children solve a mystery involving a man in a blue hat during their trip to Mystery Ranch to see Aunt Jane, clearing the name of an old friend. Adapted from the original chapter book series by Gertrude Chandler Warner, this title is the fifth in a series of graphic novels featuring the popular orphans. When the siblings set out to investigate the new town that has sprung up near the mine they discovered in a previous story, they encounter Mike, also a character from a previous book. Later, he is accused of burning down his own house. The Alden kids know he didn't do it, and they follow the clues until they discover the real culprit. While the fast pace of this format may appeal to children who may not be ready to read the original novels, condensing a detailed mystery plot into less than 32 pages results in a compromised story line. Because so much information is stripped away to accommodate the format, readers have no way of solving the mystery on their own, and often have to make rather large leaps in logic to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. The dated nature of the original "Boxcar Children" series doesn't translate well to the modern graphic novel format, with mining towns, pie shops, and traveling by train all key parts of the tale. A single page at the end of the book discusses Warner and her contribution to children's literature. Reviewer: Keri Collins Lewis

Meet the Author

The Boxcar Children Series was created by Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, when she realized that there were few, if any, books for children that were both easy and fun to read. She drew on her own experiences in writing the mysteries. As a child, she had spent hours watching trains near her home, and often dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or freight car. In each story, she chose a special setting and introduced unpredictable, unusual or eccentric characters, to help highlight the Aldens’ independence and resourcefulness. Miss Warner lived in Putnam, Massachusetts until her death in 1979.
