Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Miki Falls: Spring begins with a jolt as a young girl throws herself through a third-story window to escape a mysterious group of people. With the reader's attention firmly captured in this graphic novel, the narrative shifts to recounting the events that led to Miki's fall. Miki, a typical senior, begins a new school year and promptly falls for Hiro, the mysterious, unavailable new boy at school, who spends much of his time following people and taking notes. He rudely rebuffs Miki's attempts at friendship, but Miki persists. Despite the odds, they develop a tentative friendship, albeit one hampered by Hiro's strange behavior and refusal to discuss it. Through persistent surveillance, Miki discovers Hiro's secret, which simultaneously draws them closer and threatens to tear them apart. Volume one ends, leaving the reader eagerly anticipating volume two. Miki Falls: Summer picks up right where Spring leaves off. Miki has discovered Hiro's role as a Deliverer, a secret group that safeguards the finite amount of love in the world. His job is to capture dying love from couples about to break up and to deliver it to a new couple, who will, he hopes, nurture and protect it. The narrative tension that drives this series is the relationship between Miki and Hiro. Miki is closer to Hiro than any human is supposed to get to a Deliverer, which causes a few problems. When Miki's closest friend becomes the focus of Hiro's professional attention, Miki interferes, with unpleasant consequences. Universal themes of love, friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice neatly combine with the tempestuous swirl of teenage relationship drama. What initially appears to be a typical tale of a girlblindly pursuing an unavailable boy develops into an intriguing, complex story. Crilley uses mystery to drive the narrative and creates characters that the reader will care about. The black-and-white, manga-style art is beautiful; Crilley is equally talented at creating expressive characters as he is at drawing lush landscapes. Although a bit more text-heavy than most manga, the description and dialogue flesh out the story and create a sort of hybrid of Japanese- and American-style comics that will appeal to fans of shojo manga and romantic fiction. This series manages to be all these things and more. Given its content, it will appeal to fans of teen romantic fiction who would not normally read graphic novels.
Children's Literature
I found this book very interesting. It is a wonderful view of the mysterious unknown of love and how it happens between people. Deliverers are on earth in human form and try to save all forms of love between individuals. Because Deliverers do not always succeed in their tasks, they are able to maintain a distance from the situation and not feel the sadness that comes form lost love. Mika has become friends with Hiro, a Deliverer, and has aspirations for learning his art. Hiro takes her on one of his assignments and Mika gets a first hand look at what he does. Mika tries to influence Hiro into helping her best friend keep her boyfriend, but Hiro tells her she must back off and not get involved. Will Mika listen or take matters into her own hands? Does their friendship turn to a love of its own even though Deliverers can only be with other Deliverers? Unfortunately, most of us have experienced a broken heart sometime in our lives, and it is very hard to protect our loved one from having the same thing happen to them. This is an unusual plotline and will hold the interest of the reader from the very first page. The author gives good insight to relationships and emotions, which makes this book very appealing for girls. The graphics are excellent and I honestly reread sections of this novel just because I enjoyed it. After reading this book, the readers may think about the saying, "It is better to have loved and lost than never loved at all." I do highly recommend this book.

    Good Manga!

I've spent a long time trying different mangas and attempting to find one that was not full of rude jokes, profane language, nudity, or gore and I was beginning to lose hope. I found this series after watching one of Mark Crilley's "how to draw" youtube videos for a project I was working on. It looked good and I decided to give it a try. I was feeling like this might be my last try at finding a clean manga. When it arrived and I started to read I was SO happy! Not only was this book clean it had a pretty good plot and characters, it was well-drawn, and it was so sweet! It made me feel happy instead of sick or wrong like other not-so-nice mangas I had been recommended. I totally recommend this book! The only downside I can think of is plot over use: the whole "I can't be with you and you can't know why" is a little overused but I don't mind and it's not glaringly obvious and that's only one part of the plot. Thank you Mark Crilley for giving a manga I can read and enjoy! :)

FYI: If you didn't read the first story in the series yet (MIKI FALLS: SPRING), and you don't want the story of MIKI FALLS: SUMMER ruined, then STOP!

Hiro has not only let Miki become his friend and let her into his world a little, he's even letting her see his work. Sometimes he even takes her with him. But Miki wants more. Whenever she tries to push, even just a little, Hiro shies away. Miki can't tell if it's just her, or if it's Hiro. He claims that he can't have a relationship, but Miki thinks he's just scared. For now she'll have to be content with the knowledge that she's closer to him than anyone else.

When Hiro's latest case of love-gone-bad turns out to be Miki's best friend, Yumi, and her boyfriend, Miki is trapped. Torn between helping her friend and her promise to Hiro to not get involved, Miki has a tough decision to make. Trying to make things better often makes things worse. Add in the gorgeous girl that Miki finds over at Hiro's house, a girl who is definitely more than just Hiro's friend, and Miki's world seems to be crashing down around her. How could things have gone from so good to so bad so quickly? And how can it get better?

Both Yumi and Hiro become more multi-dimensional in this book, and Miki gains some hard-won knowledge. MIKI FALLS: SUMMER is still a great, fun, quick read, but this time there's a little more seriousness thrown in.

    A reviewer

If you read Book 1 (Miki Falls Spring), you know how Miki met Hiro and kept on until she broke down his guard and they became friend....but Miki is very curious about the mysterious Hiro. She thinks she can help -- but nothing seems to go as she plans. She ends up hurting her best friend by her actions. The ending of this 2nd book though lets you know that there is more coming -- and the closing pages promise that it will be wonderful!
